This is the story of three Hungarian boarding schools (1945-1956), established by Hungarian refugees living in post-WWII Germany. As seen through the eyes of the youth who attended these schools, this chronicle paints a vivid picture of everyday refugee life in crammed barracks with little food to eat. Since no official records from this time exist, the author and several former students have painstakingly culled the schools' histories from diplomas, old photographs, mementos and firsthand accounts from their youth. Theirs is a heroic story of teachers and students who fled the Soviet occupation of their homeland and stood together in the harshest of times to preserve their national identity. The book includes the life stories of over 120 students, many of whom went on to lead successful professional lives on three continents.
