5Wonderful children's book!  Aug 01, 2009
By Meredith Martin
This book is a beautifully drawn story of elephants playing hide and seek, counting down until the search can begin. The main character counts using the "One mississippi, two mississippi..." method of counting seconds, so the author uses this to illustrate scenes from the actual Mississippi River. Each picture is full of details relating to the number it depicts, so this is lots of fun for children to find and count all the little animals. Overall a wonderful book for children learning to count, or for all ages!!!!

5Subtle & Gorgeous  Aug 06, 2009

Karin Gustafson's 1 Mississippi is a lovely work of art for all ages! Her clever, subtle twists of classic children's games & counting methods blend beautifully with the delightful characters portrayed on every page. The simplicity of the text complements the artful & satisfying storyline. If you like elephants, you'll like this book.

5A lovely book in a crowded field  Aug 06, 2009

My kids and I loved this ethereal counting book. Ethereal elephants? I guess it's the delicate watercolors. Like all good children's books, this one is rhythmic and leaves room for questions. Elephants in the Mississippi?
