56th Street tells the colorful story of young boys growing up in Milwaukee, wisconsin, during the turbulent forties. The narrator is rob Reinhart who relates the adventures he and his friends experience, describes the neighborhood and its characters, and comments on his microcosmic society. Though the book is a series of seemingly unrelated episodes, several themes knit them together: the tenuous nature of friendships, the carefree but sometimes painful process of growing up, the gradual understanding and acceptance of others who are different, and the attempts to unravel the enigma of the opposite sex. Though the setting and characters are of a specific time and place, readers will find they are transported back to their own childhood and the wonder and confusion of coming of age.
