A Capital Murder: State vs. Governor David Roberts

"CONNECTICUT GOVERNOR ARRESTED FOR MURDER," a banner headline in the New York Times in January,2006. Early Christmas morning 2005 Anne Tremaine, a young, beautiful lawyer lobbyist, was strangled to death in her luxury condominium a few miles south of the State Capitol in Hartford. In a surprise that shocked the state and nation, the popular Governor, David Roberts, was arrested in his Capitol office and charged with her murder. He and Anne had had a torrid love affair between his two marriages. Enter Brian Kelly, a prominent criminal defense attorney and Becky Brown, a private investigator. Kelly defends Roberts in a high profile trial. Becky investigates a state rep and senator and the Mafia which is trying to build a casino. An explosive courtroom scene reveals the killer. Hostages from the governor's office are rushed to Bradley Airport in an attempt to hijack an airliner to take them to Brazil.

The best courtroom give and take. Interesting questions of law made clear to any layman. In these regards ,superior to much of the high profile legal fiction. Written by an experienced trial judge and it shows.

Capital Murder is a fine read. The court scenes and cross examinations are excellent and provide a good taste of the criminal justice system in action. Because of its insights into local procedures and locales, it should be of particular interest to Connecticut readers.

5A Great Read  Jan 06, 2010

This is a great read. There were large parts where I couldn't put it down! The author's obvious familiarity with all phases of the court system make the reader feel as if he is part of the inner circle. The characters are real people and you care about them. I hope there will be more books about Becky Brown & her activities
