Not an easy way to learn. May 17, 2008 The Brazilian pandeiro is possibly the world's coolest tambourine, and can be an astounding percussion instrument in the right hands. Clearly, the author wrote this book as a labour of love. Unfortunately, it won't help you learn to play the pandeiro: The text is virtually impenetrable, and I couldn't understand how the exercises were supposed to work. What does a sentence like "Repeat using skeleton 2 and 3 in the compound duple meter and then proceed to the simple duple patterns repeating the procedure" mean? Overall, I think that learning the pandeiro would be much easier with a good video.
On the other hand, the listing of different Brazilian rhythms looks comprehensive and might be useful to academics.
Buy this book if: You are an academic percussionist who already knows how to play the pandeiro.
Don't buy it if: You want to learn how to play.

Very practical method book Jan 19, 2008 Jonathan Gregory has put together a very user friendly and easy to follow method book here. The exercises are easy to understand and easy to follow. Pandeiro requires a lot of dexterity, and the author here has dedicated many pages in the book to assist with that. After using this book for several weeks I have noticed a huge improvement in my Pandeiro technique. If you are looking to advance your skills or interested in learning the instrument I would suggest it. The book also dedicates a section to traditional Brazilian rhythms which is a perfect way to round out the last pages.

A little disapointed Nov 30, 2007 I don't feel that this book is as helpful as most of the others on the subject. If you had no other resource this book would be good but with other resources out there with DVD's as a help at just a little more money I would recommend this book just a a side guide for a few tips.

Not for beginners... Nov 21, 2007 Excellent and yes, comprehensive, work on playing pandeiro...the user should have a familiarity with the instrument and be acquainted with musical notation in order to get full benefit from this book...I have both, and I find it challlenging, but I feel certain that through using this book and practicing diligently, I can become quite adept at playing the pandeiro...the one negative is the book has a stiff spine and is difficult to place on a music stand, a ring binder format would be much better...
