As a college student I beheld a reading from Catawba's diary at the Lowry family reunion by a 19 year old male family member. It was inspiring because Catawba died at that age in Petersburg on the date of Battle of the Crater. We were given copies of the original diary transcription. At the 100th anniversary of the Lowry-Avery Clan, Mr. Beckham presented a playlet with local actors and made the book available to us by gift and purchase. It is a good historical read and shows a fine command of prose and poetry by a young person who enlisted when 16, in other words someone who possessed literary skills at a very early age.
