A Cultural Affair: My Journey to My Gullah/Geechee People

Carlie Towne takes you on a journey through the words of her poems. This journey leads the reader to be with her in the midst of her people, the places, and things in the Gullah/Geechee Nation. She has known this place since she was born in Charleston, South Carolina as one of the many people to who this unique culture called "Gullah/Geechee" belongs. The Gullah/Geechees of the southeastern United States are known for preserving more of their African traditions and cultural heritage than any other African American community in United States of America. They speak a language which consists of an admixture of African words and phonetics with loan words from. This creole language is called "Gullah." "Geechee" is a descendant of the Gullah language which is the "pidgin" of the language. These poems give thanks to God and pay homage to the sons and daughters of Africa who were forced onto America's soil and denied their human rights. The self-determination of the people are a testimony of their faith. These poems celebrate the Gullah/Geechee people in the spirit of love, peace and joy. Da wa mekum stanso.
