A Different Kind of Streetwalker...: Manhattan by Foot, One Block at a Time

Dede Emerson walked every block in Manhattan for a total of 504.3 linear miles, equivalent to walking from Manhattan to Philadelphia five times! She was in her 70s at the time. Along the way, she photographed the offbeat, everyday side of Manhattan seldom captured in books.

5Excellent Gift and Book to Have  Jan 06, 2010
By Eric Emerson "A Photographer"
What a great idea to share photos with others in this format. NYC is an incredible place to visit. What is unique about this book is that it reminds us that after visiting the pre-requisite sights in NYC, that there are so many other interesting "real" sights - on every block. All you need to do is to look. We really enjoyed this book and it has given us ideas on how we want to spend our next trip in NYC - being more observant as we walk around the city. There is so much to see and it is so easy to miss.

5Luigi Creatore  Feb 28, 2010

I've lived in Florida since 1981, but I'm still a New Yorker at heart - and here comes a book that brings me right back to the world I knew as a child and young man carving out a career in the Big Apple. It's real.
It's delightful. The tourist thing is okay, I suppose, but this is the people's New York. I received my copy as a gift and I love it. I keep it on my cofee table and find it's a great conversation starter when guests come by. Thank you Ms Emerson.

5A Different Kind of Streetwalker  Feb 13, 2010
By Barbara Levine
A charming inspiring book about one woman's adventure walking and photographing
the unusual sites to be seen when you least expect them all over the island of Manhattan.
A unique book which everyone will have fun reading and which might inspire others to do the same.

5A delightful book.  Jan 20, 2010
By Sue F. "movie fan"
This is a delightful book. As a long-time fan of New York, I love seeing the city anew through Emerson's eyes. Her take is fresh, funny, surprising and nostalgic by turns--I find myself picking it up over and over for a special lift. This book has solved my gift-giving problems for some time to come.

5Rediscover New York wonder  Jan 09, 2010
By Patty C
We all take for granted that New York City is a place where you can do anything, but it's also a place where you can see anything, and this book is a wonder-full reminder! From photo to photo, Ms. Emerson shares her sometimes whimsical, sometimes poignant, and always unique discoveries to be enjoyed when one takes the city in "stride" with no agenda other than to appreciate its everyday ability to surprise us as individuals -- from dogs to window dressers -- make their mark on every corner. This book will bring lots of different smiles to your face, and whether you are inspired to get out your own walking shoes and camera, or just see the city streets through the eyes of a jazz musician-turned-diplomat ... it's the start of a great adventure!
