A good mix-history and fiction Mar 15, 2006
By Leroy Ashworth This book kept my interest to the end, even though it has 723 pages. Since my interest is history, the novel's historical frame of the Civil War intrigued me. The first half of "The Distant Bugle" is set in August 1862 from the Cedar Mountain battle to the 2nd Battle of Manassas. It then takes us quickly through to the surrender at Appomattox.
The southern viewpoint is portrayed through the Cavalry Lieutenant John Bradford and the experiences of Confederate soldiers. The author, not only is acquainted with the events of the war, but shows a remarkable knowledge of every day life at that time. For those, especially, whose interest is in this period of history, I recommend this book as a good read.
