Silly, Shallow, & Not Worth the Money Mar 26, 2011
By Margan I bought this book for my neice who is headed to boarding school, and the only reason I'm not more upset about my totally wasted money is that at least the author is sending half of the proceeds to Prep for Prep. I was expecting a much more honest, insightful, and useful portrayal of the ins and outs of life at boarding school; instead, this is a poorly-written, flimsy guide typed in Comic Sans on how to fit in by acting exactly like everyone else. The author is certainly cheerful, but her advice almost never goes beyond weak self-help platitudes and cliches, although when it does, look out: "sometimes it is better to conform than attempt to be too much of an individual." Yikes. I could laugh it all off as a young girl with access to a vanity press writing a book so she could add it to her college applications, but the book positions itself as a "Girl's Survival Guide" and yet contains horrible attitudes about women: "You would be amazed at how quickly girls respond to each other when they think they share the same tastes!" It also has repeated exhortations to limit yourself and not take on too much. That wouldn't necessarily be bad advice in a better-written book, but because of the complete lack of depth of thought in the writing, she seems to be attacking girls with any ambition to stand out from the crowd. I do not recommend this book to any girl who is more or less happy with herself the way she is, who has talents and ambitions or is a genuine individual. Maybe that apostrophe in the title says it all--this is the guide for only one, very specific type girl.

A must read for parents and daughters contemplating board school Nov 20, 2008

I bought this book for my daughter. We read it together. We enjoyed it so much. We laughed together. It was an eyeopening experience for the both of us. Ms. Bedrossian is insightful and very sincere and really seems to care about making sure that girls come fully equipped and knowledgable about the boarding school experience!
