An inspiring novel of how one man can make a difference Dec 08, 2009 A win on the court can be a win in the classroom. "A Man of Character" tells the story of Coach John Hawkins, as he's faced with a devastated and ravaged inner city school. Coming from the heights of prestige, Coach Hawkins' ways and leadership might not just save the school from a losing streak, but his leadership may stop his school from being the breeding grown of the scum of the earth. "A Man of Character" is an inspiring novel of how one man can make a difference.
Amy Nov 19, 2009 David White obviously has a deep passion for the game of basketball and a equally deep understanding of what an impact sports and coaches can have on the lives of young people. His story of John Hawkins, his "unpolished" gems of players, and the road they travel together is insightful and inspiring. It certainly makes you wish there were more "real" coaches like John out there, working hard, taking risks, and demonstrating real character on behalf of the troubled young people of our country's inner cities. This book would be an excellent read for anyone -- coaches, players and fans alike -- who love the game, and a rewarding experience for anyone looking for a positive, uplifting story about how hard work, commitment, sacrifice, and integrity are the true keys to success. It's a lesson we should all revisit on a regular basis, and one that is particularly relevant in today's society. Thank you, David!
Fast paced, like being inside a sideline huddle Sep 13, 2009 I thoroughly enjoyed 'A Man of Character' by David White. I found the book to be a fast paced tale that allowed me an inside ear to the sideline huddle and coach's playbook. Throughout the book I kept saying, 'so that is what goes on with the team during a game!' While not only a great sportswriter, David White brought to life the heart and soul of his main character, John Hawkins Jr. White balanced the conflict of a man's interior vulnerability and his exterior toughness perfectly as the story progressed. The character and heart of Coach Hawkins are unlifting and inspirational qualities that everyone working with youths can exemplify. Well done!
All-American Story Aug 22, 2009 The inner city setting and basketball theme are simply backdrops for the principles and values learned from the story's lead character (John Hawkins). An account of a high school team's season proves to be full of curves attempting to detour them from their goal of returning the program to its once proud prominence. As the title alludes to, it is John that must rely on his character to ensure his players have the opportunity to reach its goals both on the court, in the classroom and in life. This is an all-American story that has plenty of X's and O's for the avid basketball fan as well as absorbing off the court action allowing you to feel the full range of emtions as if you are part of the team on a quest for a state championship.
Uplifting Story Aug 11, 2009 David White's A Man of Character is a book about so much more than a high school basketball team in inner city Los Angeles. It chronicles the story of an incredible coach, John Hawkins, who has the ability to bring out the best in his team, inspite of all of the distractions around them. David does a great job of giving the reader so much insight in to the each of the players, coaches, friends and family members of Hawkins. While sports fans are sure to love this book, it really has something for everyone. Not only is it inspirational, but it also reveals how this strong man deals with heartache over the loss of a family member, as well as an ongoing relationship with the love of his life. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time.
