Good kids book May 06, 2009

We got this book for our 3 kids (ages 7 - 10) and were a little wary as it is a new publication, but the kids enjoyed it, especially the 7 year old. I think it is targeted at that age (first grade or so), though younger kids would like it if read to them. The illustrations remind me of Blues Clues - being a mix of real characters and cartoon images.

I teach first grade and my students have fallen in love with Scruffles! The illustrations are bright and engaging, plus the photos of the dog are adorable. Many of my students have pets at home, and they giggle to think their animals explore the way Scruffles does in this book. We can't wait to find out what he does next. The author hints at more adventures to come, and I know my students are anxious to hear about Scruffles floating the river.

"puzzle fan"
Vines and Ranieri-Certain have created a story that is a delight for young reader and parent, with illustrations that enliven the events and stand alone as works of art. One hopes that this is the beginning of a series, as we would like to know more about Sarah and her delightful companion Scuffles.
