A Vagabond's Journey

Loosely biographical and historically on the mark, A Vagabond’s Journey by Melanie Eve Miller is a powerful tale of one boy’s ingenuity and will to survive during the Great Depression. Finely and tightly wrought, this is historical fiction at its finest. It is an epic tale that chronicles the youthful escapades of Erling Madsen, the quirky, toe-headed youngest son of Danish immigrants in Duluth, Minnesota who, after the premature death of his mother, is sent by his overbearing father to live with a string of well-intentioned relatives. Shuffled among the whole extended lot before finally ending up back under his father’s roof with his two older brothers, Erling never feels as if he belongs or is wanted. When the stock market crash of 1929 leaves his father scrambling for a new beginning, the family relocates to San Antonio, Texas only to learn that life in the US is truly tough all over, and that Erling’s own will to survive is indomitable.

4Life of Ernie  Mar 30, 2009
I stumbled on this book, in my search for tales about Danes immigrating to North America. In A Vagabonds Journey I did find a captivating story about Erling Madsen's chaotic childhood.

But most of all I found a book by a writer who understands to paint pictures that makes you understand. When reading Melanie Eve Miller's book I understand (I think) situations, like how young Ernie must have felt when he was standing there in the corner of the kitchen, looking at his feet and listening to his father and aunt, about to take Ernie away from his happy life living with his aunt.

My warmest recommendations for this book.

5A Fantastic Book!  Mar 03, 2009
A Vagabonds Journey is a true treasure. I have really enjoyed reading it.

Even though there were hardships in this story, I wish I could have been there, right alongside Erling. In some ways, this book made me think of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens; I felt the same love for both David and Erling after reading each book.

I think that this book was written about a very relevant time, because the times of the Great Depression are very similar to the times that we face today. Something that also intrigued me was the fact that the story was based on the childhood of a real person.

I highly recommend this book!
