Who says Australians can't write science fiction? Apr 27, 2006
By William R. Harwood A Voyage to Venus was first published in Australia in 1943, a time when the machinations of a fellow named Adolf something made the movement of books into and out of Australia impossible. It consequently did not receive the worldwide distribution it deserved.
Many books written in the 1940s and earlier by such science fiction giants as Robert A. Heinlein portrayed a habitable Venus. The later discovery that Venus is no more habitable than the gas ovens at Auschwitz has not made Heinlein's books any less readable, and it does not make Healy's book any less readable.
Science fiction fans who have never before encountered Healy's delightfully tongue-in-cheek A Voyage to Venus are in for a treat.
