Apex Thinking or Cut Throat Tactics Apr 22, 2009
By OrgLeader
"Org. girl"
Ethics are one of the foundations for effective leadership. Playing games, role playing (pretending to be someone you're not) and manipulating others are not admirable traits and to some people may be considered unethical. I regret the book idolizes leaders who have mastered these techniques. I rated this book a 3 admittedly because knowing how others in my workplace may react (positive or negative reactions) may guide my leadership decisions more effectively. Loyalty and trust are far too important in any organization to abandon. I certainly hope any reader would use this as a resource for what NOT to do within any organization's leadership.
I understand how manipulating, misuse of power "for the right reasons" and other concepts mentioned in this book may be used by CEOs to take get ahead. But not all CEOs are cut throat nor do they have to be to achieve success. Examples of a good CEOs - Chief Executive Joseph Neubauer of Aramark Woldwide and Colgate Palmolive's Reuben Mark. Read Jim Collins' book Good to Great.
CEOs may be imperfect and more often wrong than right, but overall effective leadership requires integrity. At the end of the day our actions impact our reputation. A CEO's reputation is too valuable. Why tarnish it with the questionable practices this book encourages.

Apex Thinking = Leadership Reality Aug 28, 2008
By Jesse Apex Thinking offers a unique perspective for the developing leader. While many leadership books focus on concepts, models and methods that will give the developing leader a good base, this book fills in the blanks between the class room and success as a CEO in a world that is not always so cut and dry. Any leader that plans on being successful in the real world needs to add the contents of this book to their tool box to help with those situations that everyone else forgot to cover. This is the type of mentorship desired and needed by those on their way to the top.

Add this book to your leadership "tool kit" Oct 14, 2008
By D. Sparks I have been a manager at a medium-sized police organization for over ten years and I am currently in the process of earning a degree in Organizational Leadership. APEX Thinking is not one of those books that will be placed on a bookshelf to collect dust. I enjoyed APEX Thinking because it is simple to read, yet powerful and informative. Its message is applicable for both new, and veteran leaders. The most powerful quote from the book: "One discovers that it's not how hard he works, but how "smart" he works that makes the critical difference."

A Practical Guide to Running an Organization Aug 31, 2008
By J. Hensley As a lifelong student of leadership, I have read dozens of books on leadership and management with mixed feelings. Finally, after reading Apex Thinking, A guide to Long Term Leadership for the Rising CEO, I can recommend a book worth possessing. Apex Thinking cuts through the philosophical nonsense and gets right down to practical guidelines for anyone interested in running an organization. Frankly, I wish I had this book before I took on my first police chief position - I am confident the transition would have been easier for the staff and me.
