Advanced Mountain Flying Techniques

As a native of Montana, DAVID J. HOERNER, was familiar with the backcountry long before he became a pilot. His boyhood home was just outside the border of Glacier National Park where he grew up hunting and fishing the backcountry of Montana, and he was a logger before learning to fly. He is now a commercial pilot with over 25,000 hours flying in Alaska and Montana. Dave is a Part 135 Chief Pilot, owns a Part 141 Flight School for airplanes, and provides helicopter instruction through his flight school. He is a CFII for airplanes, a helicopter instructor, and one of only a few FAA certified pilot examiners for airplanes and helicopters in the United States. Over the years he has carried wolves and grizzly bears in his aircraft while doing some of his many flights for the US Forest Service and the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. Dave has two children, Ryan and Bree, and resides in Kalispell, Montana.

2mountain flying review  Dec 08, 2009
By Soco "SkyWagoneer"
I enjoyed reading through Advanced Mountain Flying Techiques, but as an experienced mountain pilot I found that the book did not meet my expectations at all. As a professional pilot I look for professional quality in the resources I use to learn and teach. The ideas and priciples in this book are poorly presented, with a lack of literary structure and grammatical accuracy making it difficult to follow. The photos did not help his presentation, some being used more than once, often of poor quality, and not having anything to do directly with the subject matter. Honestly, though the author is indeed an expert in the field, and the information contained within is very good, my 17-year old could have made a nicer and more intelligent presentation of the material. Likely, much of the responsibility for this lies with the proofer/editors before it went to print. To a new backcountry pilot, I MAY recommend this book, but I will probably not look at it nor use it again. It was not worth the price.
