American Moses

Author Stephen Witt brings a fresh, new voice to contemporary fiction with his new, offbeat novel American Moses. After an upstate New York town’s only synagogue is burned down, devastated members of the small congregation stand in the smoldering ashes wondering what’s next. The Rabbi vows to rebuild, but Southie Lewis, a secular Jew of very modest means, offers to lead whoever is willing to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas—the county’s most rapidly growing metropolis—a new Promised Land. To his surprise, a rag-tag bunch of fellow Jews sign on for the trip. So begins this interracial love story between Southie, a lifelong drifter, and Zippy, his Jamaican-American wife, who along with their two children, Coree and Billy, come up against the daunting mosaic of contemporary America, while struggling with their own lives. Written with bittersweet humor and a touch of tragedy, American Moses will make you laugh and cry while entertaining you every step of the way.

5American Moses by Stephen Witt  May 10, 2012

American Moses, by Stephen Witt
Once I started reading Steve's new book I couldn't put it down. The story would stay with me through out the day, thinking of and analyzing as I did the activites like work and other priorities delt with daily. When I was able to get back into Southie and Zippy's life I was comforted by the characters familiar personalties that led to a relationship with each of them. I don't remember this happening to me while reading a story before. The whole congregation became part of my life. I was included in this story as Southie narrated his own encounters, I became part of that group of travelers not knowing what was happening next, but believing that it was going to be better than where I was coming from. The ending isn't what I wanted to read but it left me searching for enlightened metaphoric symbols or symbolic metaphors, leaving me to make it up as I see best, unless there is a sequel.
Knowing Steven for many years his personality shines forth through this story pouring out from every page. Awesome work, captivating, and enchanting all in one. Looking forward to seeing more of the Steven Witt novels soon.

This a really good read. The kind of book you pick up and don't want to put down until you've finished it.
