Robert Willett has produced an excellent history of CNAC and its trials and successes in difficult times. He weaves the people and times through this interesting narrative in a way that makes you believe you are there. A must for anyone interested in the historical aviation of pre-communist China. Kudos!
An Excellent Book About a Little Known Subject Jan 08, 2012

"Mad Modeler"
We in World War II aviation circles have always heard about "The Hump", and how a few brave military pilots flew their transports across the Himalayas between India and China to supply the Flying Tigers and support the USAAF's war effort in that far-flung backwater of a war zone, but how many of us have learned along the way that it was actually CNAC (China National Airways Corporation), a Pan American subsidiary, that paved the way for the air routes across the tallest mountains in the world? CNAC pilots, both American and Chinese, braved the hazardous air routes just as their USAAF military counterparts did, and many died trying, just as many of their USAAF military counterparts did. This is the story of that airline and its importance in our war effort to keep China supplied. A great read, and a most informative book for any World War II or airline buff's collection.
