beautiful, savage, and a amazing look at our history Jul 23, 2010
By born to read This historically accurate look into the final days of the vanished Natchez Indian tribe kept me captivated. The beautiful young heroine came to life with her many lovers, the exciting and savage rituals, and her unexpected outcome. If you care about the people that once occupied this beautiful land, this book is a must read!

Compelling and complex story with rich historical detail May 08, 2011
By book geek An Indian Star Among Suns by Helen Oswalt is a wonderful book filled with engaging characters and historical background of the Natchez Tribe.
The relationships among the Indians and with the French are intriguing and emblematic of universals such as loyalty, betrayal, lust and deep friendship.
There is tragedy and there is exhilaration in this novel which I both enjoyed and learned from.

I have recommended this book to friends and family. Apr 28, 2011
By mitcHe|! The objective treatment given to the inherent complexities of the subject is one of the shining stars of this touching story: The juxtaposition of the harsh life and customs of the Natchez tribe against the soft and independent heart of the princess Star Eyes; the distinctive voices given to the French settlers in contrast to the French militia; and even the individuality of thought and action within these groups and that of the natives. The friendship between Star Eyes the noble and Little Moth the commoner is one of the most endearing of the sub-plots. I have recommended this book to friends and family.

Captivating AND educational novel Apr 22, 2011
By Elizabeth Normally, I do not have time to read. This book was so captivating that I found myself waking up in the middle of the night just to sneak in a few hours of reading! An Indian Star Among Suns is not only a wonderful love story, but a lesson in history. I enjoyed myself AND I learned about an American Indian tribe and their customs. I highly recommend this exciting novel!!
Extraordinary view of the life of the Natchez Jun 26, 2011
By Eleanor Oswalt's talents lie not only in her detailed research of the period, but also in her skill in bringing the Natchez to life. She does a remarkable job of depicting the customs, character, and passion of the Natchez and the perilous times in which they lived with the settlers. There is a fine balance of characters, locations, and events. This is a wonderful addition to American historical fiction. Students and those interested in American history should read this book. Highly recommended!
