An Indispensable Man

Preston Waddington well understood that corporate survival in the auto industry meant finding a way to make himself indispensable. That objective, however, did not include becoming involved in a product defect cover up, having an affair with the CEO's wife, finding himself in the middle of a law suite, stumbling across a scam involving his father-in-law the car dealer, confronting a hostile dealer body and, finally, facing the prospect of being invited by the board of directors to "fall on his sword."

5Exciting, Surprising - and Engrossing  Jul 26, 2005
By Darwin Gillett "Author of NOBLE ENTERPRISE"
As I veteran of corporate America - and a consultant to executives and teams, I appreciated Bob Ford's accurate portrayal of the intricacies and human foibles of that world.

What I didn't expect - and especially enjoyed was that I became more than just an observer - I become engrossed in all the unexpected twists and turns, rooting against the villains and for the hero. Even when I could bring myself to put the book down, I went through the day ruminating about what had just happened, strategizing about and wondering what the villains and hero would do next - and looking forward to rejoining the cast to experience the next surprising turn of events.

A great read for anyone who's lived in the corporate scene - or anyone for that matter who just thrives on human intrigue.

Hooray for this one! I'm hooked - Now give us the sequel!

5A Good Guy Finishes First  Jul 18, 2005
By Ronald R. Gartner "R.R. Gartner, PhD."
So John Cheever, P.G. Wodehouse, the editors of the National Lampoon and the Enron Ethics Task Force walk into a bar in Greenwich, Ct, and....

Well, maybe not quite but An Indispensable Man is great fun, clever and well written.

An unspeakable act in a speeding car ends in tragedy, launches a scandalous cover-up and threatens the captains of idiocy who who run a major car company as well as the company itself.

The story is populated with the archetypal bounders, rogues, louts and knaves who slither through the car business from top to bottom and some decent folks who have to deal with them.

If you have worked anywhere in the car industry, as I have for a quarter century, you will especially enjoy this tale and Preston Waddington's struggle to stay afloat amidst the tortured craziness of corporate "strategy', advances from the boss's wife and an endless barrage of cleverly drawn silly people of the first magnitutde. If you have never had the pleasure of the car business up close and personal, you will still be glad to be along for the ride.

5A great read - if you have time to not put it down...  Jul 14, 2005
By P. N. Hrisko "Car Buff"
This book is a great, fast, read. I was stuck in NYC at the JFk airport and decided to start reading this book. 4 hours later, when my plane was supposed to board, I had trouble closing the cover and stashing it in my briefcase. Ir was that good.

The characters are believeable. The plot moves along. At the end, you almost cheer for Preston as he gets his "comeuppance".

It's not just a novel about the car industry, though it plays a role, it's about the human condition. It's about the "everyman", trying to keep ahead of the game.

Greatly recommended.

4An Indispensable Man is an Indispensable Read!  Jul 14, 2005
By Cindy Taurus "CAT"
I just finished reading this very witty book. Author Ford does a great job of creating multiple intriguing plots, that one can follow. The characters are centered around the automoblie industry, and although, it is clear that Ford knows the automoblie industry and all the shenanigans that go on behind the scene, this book is by no means just for those involved or interested in the auto industry. I loved it!

It is a great fictional novel about the politics, scandals, lies and deception that happen well beyond the auto industry.

Enjoy the wit, the irony and the intriguing relationships among characters in the book. It's a great read both this summer and anytime you are in the mood for a good fiction read!

5Wit and Literary Irony  Jul 11, 2005
By Dr. Harry F Fry
A thoroughly enjoyable read. A story told with wry wit and literary irony in its oldest and truest sense. In the protagonist Waddington and his entrapment in the human condition, one is reminded of Yossarian and his predicament in Joseph Heller's unforgettable novel, Catch 22. There is something in both characters and their stories that has the universal appeal of the Trickster who becomes the victim of his own cleverness. Dr. Harry F. Fry
