A Damned Fine Read Nov 14, 2010
By Lenny Palmeri It's been a long time since I read any poetry, and when I received a copy of "And Now A Story To Tell" by Dave Supple, I was hesitant to crack the covers and wade through its text. Modern-day poetry after all, has become an exercise in self-indulgence, a sort of show-and-tell of the heart for grade school emotion. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. Supple had none of that in this wonderful book of mature verse. From the very first lines one realizes that this is a man who has entered the black hole of the soul and come out on the other end not only healed, but enlightened. There is no attempt to impress with strained metaphor or simile stretched to the breaking point. The language is straightforward and to the point, the emotion masculine yet at times surprisingly tender. From boy to man, from gadabout to husband and father, Mr. Supple's journey of self-realization is one each and every one of us can identify with. It is universal, and infinite, yet one in which so many writers fail to forge a touchstone with their readers. Not so here. Especially engaging are the lines written about his wife, with whom he is obviously very much in love, and with whom he has traveled a rocky path to a bond sealed with mutual respect. Divided into five sections "And Now A Story To tell" not only delves into the soul of the writer, but also an assortment of characters who come alive on the page, and a final section dealing with the decline and decay of modern America. This is what poetry should be, and almost never is. I now carry Mr. Supple's book with me when stopping for coffee, or maybe a quiet moment in the park. It both challenges and soothes the mind, and no reader can expect more than that.

Not a poetry fan, but I love this book! Mar 12, 2008
By M. Terrill I'm not much of a poetry fan but "And Now a Story To Tell" is different because of the author and his life experiences. Dave Supple is a bar owner, an ocean swimmer, a man of action and a person of limitless talent. His poem on actor Steve McQueen gets to the heart of the man and why we love him so much. This book will stay in my permanent collection.
Powerful Images Feb 13, 2008
By H. Giacomini This collection of poetry is extremely powerful even in its broad approaches -- some that are very personal and others very public and politically timely. I was moved by some of a more personal nature, such as "Ode to Acne" and "To Ryan, My Son, at Twenty-One". Then shaken by "Teacher" and the longer narrative "A Damned Crying Shame". The section entitled Bushwacked is excellent. I especially liked "America, America". Mr. Supple has captured some realistic emotions about very personal relationships as well as the impact of political decision-making on our society. Well done!
A Breath of Fresh Air for Poetry Feb 04, 2008
By B. Supple
"B.E.T.S"
In a literary climate where proving one's poetic skill has more to do with making other people feel dumb than actually connecting with people, this book of poetry is a tremendous step in the right direction. Dave Supple's poetry is at once honest, intelligent, witty, and brave, and most importantly, it is accesible to people of all walks of life, of every age and background. Poetry, at long last, has someone willing to fight for it, and to make it relevant again.
