Escaping the Inescapable Jan 29, 2011
By Antoinette Lajoie Philip Makau's first novel, Anyone Can Dream, offers us an intimate view of life in an isolated village in British Colonial Kenya. Rarely are we invited to so vividly witness a seemingly inescapable life of unimaginable poverty and hardship. The story is told with a flair for humor and attention to detail as lived by Mark, a young Kenyan boy raised with the belief that, through determination and education, anything is possible. His belief bears fruit as he fights against all odds and reaches a new land where all his dreams come true. This novel is a celebration of triumph over obstacles rarely conquered. Bravo Dr. Makau.
From another world to this one Apr 25, 2007

This book transports us to another world, as we travel with the author through vignettes of the hero's life. It is a world few of us will come in contact with in reality, but this book gives us the chance to live in it peripherally. Poignant, at times comical, always wonderfully readable, it is a book to savor and share with friends. I highly recommend it.
