Awake in This Life: A Guide for Those Climbing the Mountain of Spirit

Is it possible to bring the peace of an enlightened perspective into the middle of our busy lives? Spiritual teacher and author Michael McAlister provides answers in his groundbreaking new book, Awake in This Life: A Guide for Those Climbing the Mountain of Spirit. Written in clear, often humorous prose, Awake in This Life guides readers into leading more conscious lives and awakening to what is forever sacred and true in each of us. Less about a particular spiritual path than a comprehensive study of spirituality itself, the book demonstrates how to bring about profound realization into our day-to-day lives. Drawing from the deep wells of eastern and western spiritual traditions, McAlister shows readers what to expect on the journey, how to maneuver around roadblocks, and finally how to integrate the teaching into a new and more sacred way of living.

5If you really want to know!  Aug 01, 2009
If you really want to know how to awaken (achieve some level of enlightenment, or climb the mountain of spirit) in this lifetime, there is no better book to lead you in that direction. Michael McAlister has an excellent command of the English language, and, though the experience of enlightenment is beyond words, (indeed it is beyond mind) he is able to use words to present concepts in a manner that one can grasp. No other book has helped me further down that path.

5Practical, Honest and Fun  Apr 16, 2009
Books in this genre often struggle by being too verbose and somewhat ethereal. McAlister claims right from the start that he isn't going to teach anything new but he will present it in a different light. It's very effective and the "climbing" metaphor provides the reader a visceral model that gives structure to the complex discussion of enlightenment. McAlister is honest in his writing and will often explain complex topics in a few different ways. The reader is never left to linger in the abyss without some guidance and structure. McAlister's humour also adds levity to the topic without trivializing. A very enjoyable, practical and digestable read on one of the most challenging topics in our lives.

5An excellent primer  Apr 02, 2009
Michael McAlister gives us a well-written, concise description of a path to enlightenment, based on Zen Buddhist teachings. Far from being dry or intimidating, his experience and humor shine through on every page. I appreciate his perspective that enlightenment for its own sake is not the point - rather the point is to bring what we know and learn into the world. It makes me wish I lived in the Bay Area, so I could participate physically in the Infinite Smile Sangha. At least I have this book, and his podcasts to give me tips along the path. Highly recommended for seekers of all stripes.

5Awake and Buy This Book  Dec 04, 2008
Michael's teachings are fantastic and have a great universal message accessible to all walks of life. I thoroughly enjoy this book - it has a place on any bookshelf and will be revisited on mine many times.
