Disappointment Feb 10, 2008 I was sorry to see that the book was merely a printout of a number of scripts not adapted to searching for ideas for instance.
To it's defense when you take the energy (a lot is needed) it's evident that
a lot of possible solutions are given. But then again, very indigest.
Take a look inside this book before you buy it Jun 30, 2007 I totally agree with Fred Fuchs. This is the most inaccessible book I've ever bought. There simply isn't any formatting at all. It looks worse than some hand-written 17th century books I've seen in libraries. Seems like the author merged a couple of hundred of scripts from his shell scripting 'playground' directory into one big text file, sent it to the publisher, who decided to print it the very next day.
Perhaps some of you can work with books like these very well. But I don't. I get very distracted when a book isn't laid-out well, doesn't have an index and logical ordering of chapters and sections, allowing you to search easily and quickly, by topic, by complexity, etc...
Having said that, I didn't use the book very much, and I'm really not a Unix expert. I'm the last one to judge the quality of the scripts presented in the book. Perhaps they are very valuable, I can't say at this moment. I might adjust this review or write another one once I've an opinion on that...
I would say: Go to your bookstore and have a good look at this book before you buy it, don't buy it from the internet.

Book of code May 29, 2007 This book does not offer any kind of real commentary or suggestions for learning the shell or even comparisons to other shells. It's merely a compilation of scripts with comments, some are several pages long. This book would make a nice companion to a more entry-level introduction to BASH programming. I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners or to people with no BASH programming experience. If you need code samples, there a dozens of sites on the Internet that have what you need.

Save Time and Get Your Job Done - Buy This Book May 15, 2007 Mr. Smith has compiled a useful selection of scripts that you can use NOW.
UNIX and the BASH shell allow the user to solve a problem with inumerable combinations of tools and methods. Mr. Smith has recorded his solutions and organized them in a common sense manner. Each script is named by what it does: "PROGRAM: untar_1_file.bash" and states its purpose: "PURPOSE: Show how to untar 1 file from a tarfile."
One valuable aspect of this series that I have not explored is the "Rosetta Stone" approach. Two other books contain the same scripts and solutions, but use Korn Shell in Book 1 and Perl in Book 2 (see links below). I subscribe to using that method especially if you know one of the languages and want to learn another.
This book is no-frills - printed in black on white - just as if you'd used vi and lp to produce it. I look forward to a forthcoming edition with an index and electronic version.
Thanks to the author for saving and documenting his work to save the rest of us lots of time.

Needs soft version of the code samples -- do not waste your time Jan 12, 2007 This book a bunch of code samples in printed form. There is no index or any other way to search through this mess. The only way to use this book is to retype all of the code samples. Why would anyone want to buy this book when samples are freely available on the internet? This is a good example of the dangers of purchasing books on the internet.
