Like Fan Fiction, Only Not Mar 20, 2011
By Jessica Robinson
"Jess R."
I received this book for Christmas, and while I am usually delighted with anything ballet, this book was beyond disappointing. The characters are all cartoons, from the rich girl with her McMansion (mentioned no less than five times) to the tough urban ghetto tomboy (whose characterization is downright offensive). The plot limps along and it's absolutely unclear how the characters go from being enemies to friends. And the discussion of ballet itself is entirely terrible. There's a lot to pick at, but let me start with the most obvious: learning to dance ballet takes more than a summer of lessons. This book perpetuates the myth that dancing en pointe is something that everyone can or should do.

My daughters love this series Feb 21, 2011
By teen reader This ballet series, Ballet Friends, is very popular in our house. Both my daughters read it and are big fans. My wife left a review for #3 before when my older daughter was reading these books for the first time. And now with my younger daughter (age 10) getting started with the series, the whole family decided that Ballet Friends deserves a good grade. We've been very happy seeing our daughters reading so much and enjoying these books. What we like about Ballet Friends and especially Toe-tally Fabulous is the amusing cast of characters whose every activity revolves around ballet. In this book the girls become best friends in ballet class while trying on toe shoes for the first time. My daughters practically live at the dance studio - so this is right up their alley. It's easy to read yet smart, funny, and age appropriate. With so many wonderful books in the series (and we have them all) there are hours and hours of enjoyment. Worth every penny.

It's a "No" from me Oct 31, 2010
By Tammy Poole My daughter is in ballet and starting pointe work...and she does not enjoy reading, so I found this book "hoping" that it would interest her. Well, she never picked it up (thankfully) so I read it to see if I should encourage her to read it.
In a nutshell: I was thoroughly disappointed. I am not going to go into detail, because I will probably be shunned for judging a book written for pre-teens and I'm a mom reading it....but, I always read the books that my children/teens read, so that I can discuss them with them (and see if they are appropriate) and this one was just "disappointing" to say the least.
Maybe they get better in the series. Maybe there is a nitch that this book appeals to. I can't see it. ANd it is not what I would want my daughter to read, so I promptly put it into our donation pile.
