Bark up the Right Tree: Lessons from a Rescued Dog

People of all ages will enjoy this heart- warming, fun-to-read story written from a dog’s perspective. Jessie, an older rescued dog, tells how she was betrayed by a loved one and abandoned by her lifelong family. Through an unusual set of circumstances she’s adopted sight-unseen by Ruth, a woman who follows her dreams. It’s a fascinating story, as ordinary as it is extraordinary. You’ll recognize yourself and every dog you’ve ever owned while marveling at Jessie’s unique journey from being a frightened, sickly, hard-to-place dog to being everyone’s darling as a therapy dog and a grinning “poster girl” for a Kids’n’Kritters campaign. This captivating book--an ideal gift for any occasion--is short enough to be read in one can’t-put-it-down sitting, yet long enough to be a chapter-by-chapter bedtime story with lots of thoughts to ponder. You’ll sniffle, chuckle, sing a song or two, and be encouraged to reach out to others. Proceeds will benefit children and animals in need of loving homes.

5Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review  Jul 25, 2009
By Virginia S. Grenier "Children's Author & Stories for Children Magazine Founder & Editor-in-Chief"

Have you ever had someone tell you that you were "barking up the wrong tree"? Jessie is a mature black Labrador Retriever whose original family can no longer keep her, so they drop her off at an animal shelter. From there, the people at Rawhide Rescue in New Jersey, a group that strives to give abandoned pets a new start, takes an interest in her and begins posting her information on the internet. At the same time, Ruth Tschudin, an author and former teacher, is out for a morning walk and has a vision of a dog pulling a child in a wagon. This is related to her longtime dream of creating a development where adoptive families and rescued animals could love and support one another. To make a long story short, Ruth and Jessie find each other. So how do things work out?

Told by Jessie herself (after all, didn't George and Barbara Bush's dog Milly write her own White House memoirs?), Bark Up the Right Tree chronicles the activities of Jessie and Ruth as they come to know one another, start to settle into a regular family life together, learn to overcome Jessie's past problems, meet new friends, get Jessie certified as a Canine Good Citizen and an International Therapy Dog, and find that wagon for Jessie to pull children in. Each chapter ends with a "'Paws' for Lessons Learned." And there is a photo album at the end. This is a book that all children, especially those who adore animals, will enjoy. An added bonus is that ten percent of all the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to help charities that help animals and children in need of homes, including Kids `n' Kritters, a project of the Open Doors, an Amazing Grace Foundation that Ruth has set up in memory of her mother. I grew up with dogs around, so I found the book fascinating.

5left me smiling and sometimes chuckling out loud  Apr 11, 2009
By Debra Gaynor "ReviewYourBook.com"
Bark Up The Right Tree was written by Jessie, a black Lab, and her mommy, Ruth Tschudin. This adorable book was written from Jessie's point of view. The story begins sadly with Jessie left at a shelter by her former owners. Jessie was used to a loving family, but one of the children had started hurting her. It was for her benefit that she was given away. Jessie was very sad and became ill. Ruth had wanted a dog for a long time, but she had to convince her husband. This story has a happy conclusion. Jessie has a loving home and is well cared for by Ruth and Hugo.
Bark Up The Right Tree left me smiling and sometimes chuckling out loud. The author's love for Christ shines through in this book. I loved the "Paws" between each chapter. "Paws" is a bit of wisdom learned from Jessie. Tschudin shines light of the tragedy of abused animals and the need to give rescue animals a home. I am an animal lover with a German Shepherd and a feline baby. Next time I acquire a pet, it will be through a rescue program. Both young and old will appreciate Bark Up The Right Tree.

5Lessons for Dogs and Humans Alike!  Apr 02, 2009
By Donna Aviles "Author: Beyond The Orphan Train"
Jessie the black lab, rescued from a shelter and now living with her new family, has written her very own book to share her lessons learned in a whimsical, easy to read style that serves to shed light on the important issue of abandoned animals.

Impeccably edited and formatted for visual appeal, BARK UP THE RIGHT TREE has the added bonus of recapping Jessie's experiences on the "PAWS For Lessons Learned" page at the end of each chapter. These are, in fact, universal lessons (take care of those you love, look for and bring out the best in each other, let go of the past, make good use of today) that can be taken to heart by dogs and people alike.

Jessie's book, and her new life after being rescued, is spiritually inspired by her new owner Ruth who envisioned Jessie's role in the Kids N Kritters campaign to help homeless children and animals find the loving families that they need. Through prayer and perseverance, this appears to be becoming a reality. Unfortunately, since the book only covers the first year of Jessie's new "rescued" life, the story ends when she receives her Therapy Dog Photo ID. I wanted to read more about her work as a therapy dog, and her "Waggin Wagon" adventures which were referred to throughout the book but never truly materialized for the reader.

BARK UP THE RIGHT TREE includes many color photos of Jessie and her new family and friends, and the cover has a professional look and feel. I could easily see it being marketed at Veterinary Offices and Pet Stores. Jessie's book is a delightful tale that will be sure to please animal lovers of all ages.

5A Heartfelt and Wonderful Story for 'All'  Mar 31, 2009
By Ms. Claudia LUKAC-DELIMAN "Claudia"
This truly is an uplifting book read in one sitting! It touched me deeply and I couldn't wait to share my thoughts on this wonderful story with my family. It brought a flood of memories back to me as I remembered my gifted time with my wonderful Dalmatian companion, Petey. He has been gone since June 03, and yet his presence and forever smile are with me forever. I plan on sharing this book with all my family and friends. In particular with my Mom and her friends who are in an Assisted living home. I know when any of the family members bring in their special companions to visit (like Jessie), it lights up their faces with happiness and joy that brings a genuine throb to my heart and happy tears to my eyes.

Thank you Jessie, Ruth, Hugo,Elisa, and Annabelle for sharing this most enlightening heartfelt story.
Bark up the Right Tree: Lessons from a Rescued Dog

Ten percent of the proceeds from this book will go to charities that help animals and children in need. What a wonderful way to inspire by sharing and giving at the same time.
