Barker's Pond

It begins with a camper's disappearance while fishing the scenic Buffalo River in rural Tennessee. The Logan County's search and rescue efforts turn ugly when the camper's grisly remains are found four days later. Sheriff Dan Parks finds himself pitted against an unknown entity as Memorial Day campers flock to the area for a long weekend of camping, fishing, canoeing, and swimming. His search for answers is hindered by inclement weather, rowdy campers, and unruly locals, as he races against time to find the cause of death. His attempts to protect the public are also thwarted by local businessmen who rely on busy weekends for their livelihood. Before Sheriff Parks can find the answer to the camper's gory death, two locals go missing. Not knowing what he is up against or which way to turn, Sheriff Parks enlists the aid of Dr. Clay Richards, a Jackson veterinarian and noted herpetologist. The search for answers leads to Annie Barker's place. In her eighties and distrustful of most outsiders, Annie is the last of her once prominent but shady family. Sheriff Parks and Dr. Richards begin to unravel the painful past and long buried secrets of the Barker family. Bitter secrets still guarded by the last living matriarch, whose hundreds of acres border the Buffalo on both sides. And, on whose property, secrets long forgotten still thrive.

Wow! Movie material. This thriller set in rural America, has all the ingredients for a suspense filled horror movie. The characters are genuine and right out of true country life, from the county sheriff to the eccentric Annie Barker. A truly enjoyable read.

5Super! A real page turner!  Apr 16, 2010
By Marcia S. Freespirit
Just in time for canoeing season, this book will give you the heebie-jeebies about sticking your toes in the Buffalo River. Sue winds for us a chilling tale about unfortunate events, long lost secrets, death and mystery that are all running cold between the banks of the Buffalo.

Chock full of country characters that you may recognize in almost any small town, the story focuses on events that occur on and near the Buffalo. Barker's Pond is a fabulous read and will keep you late up at night - with all the lights on, to find out why people keep going missing once they set out on our beautiful River.

But don't worry, this book is all fiction, and I have been assured that the Buffalo River is safe and we can all look forward to wonderful times swimming, floating and canoeing down its majestic waters.

Read the book, then prove yourself brave by setting out on the grand ole' Buffalo!

5EXCELLENT BOOK  Jul 30, 2008
By Michael N. Averett
Barker's Pond is a wonderful summer read. Sue Franks takes us right to the beautiful Buffalo River in rural Tennessee, showcasing its splendor and mystery. She reminds us that we do not share our habitat alone and to respect our environment and the creatures that share it. Franks captures the essence of her characters. From Annie Barker, the garrulous old matriarch of a shady family, to the beleaguered small town sheriff, Dan Parks, Franks weaves a tale of death, betrayal, misunderstanding, and long forgotten family secrets. Barker's Pond is a book that you can not put down. Treat yourself.

3Flawed but worth your time.  Jun 09, 2008
By The Old Drake "the old drake"
This book is self-published through Amazon's Book Surge subsidiary. That fact is evident throughout in the annoying little typos and mis-used words (for example, "loose" for "lose"). The lack of tight editorial standards usually found with a commercial publisher allowed Franks to repeat the same things over and over. How many times do we need to be told that the town is experiencing hard times?

In spite of that, I did find this book worth my time. I think Franks could become a popular writer if a big publisher picked her up and gave her the same editorial help the big names get. Her approach to an old idea (Close the beaches, mayor, there's a shark out there!) is interesting. While I have canoed small rural rivers and streams, I must admit the idea of a huge man-eating snapping turtle would never have occurred to me. While Franks maintains that Tennessee is too far north for an alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temmincki) a good editor and fact checker could have easily discovered that its territory includes Tennessee and Kentucky. A locally famous 150 lb specimen Named "Big Bill," was caught in the Big Muddy River in Southern Illinois. In spite of these little lapses, Franks portrait of small town Tennessee life rang true and her characters were believable.
