5EVERYONE MUST READ THIS!!!  Feb 04, 2006
By Ikenna Obumneme "Iyke"
Wow!!! I read Behind the Screen by Ejike Aghanya and I was amazed with the lessons I learnt after reading this wonderful book.
Colonel E. O. Aghanya's book has filled a huge gap in existing accounts of the Nigeria/Biafra war - the scientific and engineering improvisations by which Biafran scientists sought to alleviate their heavy disadvantage in military hardware and foreign governmental support. Colonel Aghanya was not merely eye-witness to that extra-ordinary effort; he was officially invited to initiate and lead it. He had trained in Britain as a radio/electronic engineer, had taken up appointment on his return with the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation from where he had been seconded to the Nigerian Army just before the January 1966 military coup.
Colonel Aghanya gives us a fascinating account of the beginnings of that quasi-secret and somewhat romantic organization known as RAP (Research and Production) which he assembled from science and engineering professors who had fled home from various Nigerian universities. Their projects ranged from food processing to the development of rockets, flame throwers and that massive destroyer christened "Obgunigwe". But perhaps the most remarkable success of RAP in that conflict was its petroleum refineries. That these and other projects actually happened in the Biafran enclave, and that they disappeared again so quickly and so completely with the defeat of Biafra gives us cause for reflection.
Colonel Aghanya is deeply passionate about the role of science and technology for development, in war and peace. He is also known for his commitment to democracy, to truth and honesty in public life. In this book he speaks clearly in his own style and his words about a tragic period in Nigeria's recent past in which he was deeply involved, Nigeria will do well to listen.
To cap it all, this wonderful book was foreworded by the grwat by Prof. Chinua Achebe. One of the greatest writers in the world.
I ask everyone to get a copy of this wonderful book
