Behind the Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon's Mask

Some interviewers are calling the slim hardback a 'tell-all,' but to Troi Martin, it's just the facts. And while Martin encourages people to have plastic surgery, her book is loaded with cautionary tales, out-of-control egos and anecdotes that, while humorous, might make a person interested in pursuing plastic surgery think twice. The book itself doesn't talk about procedures specifically; rather it focuses on the characteristics of the professionals who work in the field. It's easy to understand how plastic surgeons fall prey to greed, she said. In this day and age where movie-star good looks and youth are glorified, people line up for a nip and a tuck. The ever-increasing demand for their services allows successful surgeons to make enormous amounts of money, and there is a temptation to sacrifice a patient's well-being in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Martin said it is common for surgeons to perform up to eight procedures in a day, with patients toward the end of the day unaware of the doctors' caseload. As a result, doctors may be hurried and tired. This over-scheduling can contribute to a doctor being rougher with patients or even more prone to make mistakes as he tires.

1And you thought *doctors* were Goniffs!!  Mar 01, 2006
By Yennta
This is a total cheat. A self aggrandizing load of bull with no useful info except a bit on how long recovery takes --- which anybody browsing plastic surgery sites or talking to patients can find out. The rest is all little personal anecodotes: "my life as a cosmetic guru." Stupid doctors, smart doctors, stupid office staff, smart etc. Not particularly well written and sketchy. And really, really short. I kept looking for the "meat." Got to the end and there was nothing there.

5Class Act  Oct 29, 2005
By Surgical Tech
The Author has worked with Plastic Surgeons for over 20 years, I have only worked with them for 5 years. I believe this author was right on when describing the charaters of these Doctors. I found this book humorous yet informative. Coming from the inside of the Plastic Surgery world I would reccommend this book to anyone, weather you are interested in Plastic Surgery or not. The Author has been very candid about her personal and professional experiences with Plastic Surgeons and Staff, yet respectful.

5Still a highly valuable publication  Jan 06, 2007
By Sarah in Danville
Even though this book has been out a couple of years, it was recently recommended to three women who were considering plastic surgery. Within a day of reading the book, all 3 of them cancelled their surgery with the same doctor. Troi Martin has done a great service by exposing the "underbelly" of this profession. While we must all make our own decisions it is most helpful to have the "insider" info! Certainly none of the surgeons themselves are inclined to honesty...they are only inclined to their bank accounts. Thank you Miss Martin for bringing to light things we would otherwise never have known! It is better to know ahead of time rather than dealing with devastation later.

1Nothing is Behind the Mask  Sep 21, 2006
By Dara Sanchez "Dara"
Save your money on this one. The title is the only good line. And the title is also misleading. Rather than learn what's behind the mask, the reader is treated to the author's resume, and her stint as an office assistant/surgical technician. Poorly written, riddled with typos and misplaced punctuation. Self-published.

Obviously the last review was one of the Doctor's- Miss Martin mentions in her book. Funny but pathetic Doctor. I just finished the book along with "A Guide for Customer Service in the Beauty Industry" also written by Miss Martin. Even though I have no plans of ever seeking out plastic surgery I found both books very intertaining however very short. I also can see why the unethical Doctor's and their wife's would have a problem with Miss Martin and this book.
