An engrossing page turner! Feb 05, 2009
By Helen Gray Behind the Sun is a great read. Sci-fi, history, mythology, psychology, religion and action - this book pushed all the right buttons for me. Sue Neilsen effortlessly combines Stargate-eque action with the kind of old school sci-fi that explores what it means to be human.
The story is set in the not too distant future where, despite some technology advances, security is tight, terrorism is still a threat and the UN is still ineffectual. An international exploration is sent to the newly discovered Earth 2 to investigate it's suitability for habitation - yup, Earth 1 is still just as polluted and over crowded. And that's all I' can say plot wise without spoilers.
Even at close to 600 pages this was an effortless read. The plot twists and action kept me turning the pages way past bedtime night after night as the exploration team faced sabotage and psychological bombshells. The conclusion of Behind the Sun is really only the beginning; Sue's characters have a whole new world to explore and I'm looking forward to seeing a sequel soon.

Jumped the shark about halfway through.. Feb 14, 2010

I've never read anything by this author, and I purchased the book based on the great reviews.
I had great expectations for this book, and it didn't disappoint until the Greek, Roman, and Norse gods showed up. Then it became ridiculous. It was as if some space cadet had written the second half. Several times I had to take a break because I was laughing too hard.
In this case, my "willful suspension of disbelief" wasn't enough to carry it. I read it through to the end, however, but what a disappointment. Just about any sci-fi writer's book would be better.
Fast-paced and fascinating Aug 07, 2010
By Nic I've read a lot of science-fiction, and every so often, you come across a book that completely surprises you with the ideas within.
This is one of those.
It starts as a grand adventure, with plots of mystery and intrigue. So many questions, so many factions. The story builds as you learn more about the characters', their mysterious pasts and the new challenges they face exploring a new world. What they find there, well, as I said at the beginning, was something completely new and unexpected.
The tone of the book is thrilling, and the final few chapters I had to read at breathtaking pace to see what happened. It raises so many interesting questions and dilemmas about humanity and the nature of who we are and who we are to become.
I eagerly await the sequel!
A wonderful retelling of mythology and Sci-Fi blended into one book Feb 25, 2010
By Matty While I dont often write reviews, this is a special occasion, everyone has an opinion about something and we all have to make our minds up on our own but this first book from an emerging author really took hold of my imagination and it has to be said :-)
if you have a sense of adventure this book wont disappoint, not to spoil the details, it includes a fun romp into space where new meets old and everything is not what it first seems, there are fights for survival, morality tales and even parts that will make you laugh out loud, Don't let others discourage your curiousity, you know you want to get hooked like I and the other posters before me have and we can't wait for the next book.
happy trails
