2Not really true?  Feb 12, 2002
By Jason Jones
Not necessary alll you read in the sample pages is true. There must have been some creative genius to write such terrific ideas. Although great ideas, lack of sensibility and realism, makes this book below average. Check it out for your self, you decide.

3Backstory?  Oct 29, 2003

Having only read the excerpt, I can't attest to the literary merit of the book as a whole. However, I offer some doubts as to the credibility of the story, since one of the co-authors (Hotaling) was in my high school graduating class (and, if you check her description of Coxsackie, you'll see that the exceptionally small size of the town meant that we all knew each other-- and each other's business-- very well). Imagine my surprise to see her describing her high-school self as cruelly taunted, plagued by misunderstanding, and with no one to appreciate her numerous talents. Sadly, none of this is actually true, which isn't to say that book can't still be readable, but it does detract from the idea that it's an all-too-true tale of great hopes born of harsh beginnings. Michelle had pretty eyes and a lot of ambition, but lacked-- at least at that time-- the natural abilities (singing, acting, dancing) that make a great performer. This didn't keep her from wearing her "Pink Ladies" jacket all over school when we did "Grease", but that's beside the point. Either way, something to keep in mind when reading the book; it may be a good story, but it's not a true one.

5Bette or Bust  Sep 13, 2006
By Dream On
Although talent has been debated, Michelle Hotaling's music can be heard. Album comes out in October 2006. Check it out! Bette or Bust was a great go-getter's read and it's nice to see that another creative work has finally surfaced. I'm looking forward to getting my copy of "Chained by Dreams."

4Glitter Me Up!  Nov 13, 2003
By Agnes
Bette or Bust has been sitting on my bookshelf for almost a year before getting read (it's easy to get backed up with reading materials). Oddly the book is tagged fiction, but with the swarm of reality tv and sensationalism in the media it's to be expected. A few reviewers may have questioned validity- but this ain't The Bible, which is supposed to be true non-fiction as well. It's too tongue and cheek to be taken all literally, especially with the formulaic Cinderella-to-be-diva story. No mention of a Pink Ladies' jacket, but it would have looked ridiculously fabulous with the glittered up Bette Midler crowns!

The book is a drag queen's dream and glad I got around to it. I just read a press release of Bette's upcoming tour- wonder if the girls will be out and about on this adventure. I look forward to the updates myself.

Keep the glitter alive girls!

5"Bette or Bust" Is No Bust  Oct 16, 2001
By Sallie Kemper
For some reason, accidents happen and we are led to new adventures. That is how I came to Bette or Bust. Take a peek at this fresh new voice, if not for a tumultuous roller coaster of laughter, then to enliven your own dreams of the past. Of witty bantor and tales in this book, you too can realize there is still hope in this world.
