5Better At School Book Review  Jun 20, 2009
By Diane Gold "Corporate Tai Chi Girl aka The Unconscious Awakener"
Having taught music to general and behavior problem-labeled children in New York school systems for 20 years, 20 years ago, I have lasting impressions about how children present their life stories in their actions. From this experience, I would like to commend Ms. Bernard for publishing a simple, concise, user-friendly, adult- and child-friendly Operation Manual for tuning up skills and behavior in school. The information in Better At School is not new, is common sense based but addresses the every day basics that work to enhance learning, build responsibility, nurture the parent-child relationship and help to maintain parent-child boundaries.

As a current 25-year martial artist, instructor and custom training developer; the crucial element in every lesson is building, maintaining and using a foundational structure. Without it, we fall. With it, we build. The same applies to all learning. And Ms. Bernard gives a sequence of basics, with easy-to-follow examples that can be used by parents and students, alike, to build this type of learning backbone.

Her book is gentle enough so that parents won't run away from the information and might find it useful. It is non-threatening enough where children can read it without completely rejecting it. The book has enough merit that, if in a classroom again, I might assign students to read a page of the book a day, minimum three pages a week, with the additional requirement that they read it out loud to their parents and get one comment per page to take back as the completion of their assignment. This would allow an arena for the information to be heard and require parent-child discussion in building good habits, usually never addressed in a calm fashion. Most of the time, the behaviors in this book are only talked about AFTER there is a failure. This book encourages interaction between parent and child to encourage responsible behavior BEFORE failure occurs.

Just as parenting is tough, so is growing through the school years. Better At School is a mindful book with good information anyone can digest. The voice used is conversational, so it draws the reader in as if the author is speaking directly. If you are a parent (or child) willing to look at yourself, the book is worth the read.

5WISH I HAD THIS BOOK BACK WHEN!  Apr 28, 2009
By Margaret Wells
I wish I had this book when I first started homeschooling.
Perhaps I would not be running into the gamut of situations outlined as examples of the "before", and might now be closer to the goals of the "after". Ms. Bernard has written ïn a "straight-talking" down to earth style that makes easy reading. I recommend this book as a gift to
parents of young kids so they can get an early start. Now that we have
had two years in middle school, no longer homeschooled, I can relate to
all the "don'ts" and will continue to refer to this handy little book for
the upcoming high school years. Even teachers can benefit from her years
of experience and observation. I look forward to her sequel with anticipation.

5Great simple easy advice to follow  Apr 08, 2009
By V. Cobb "colortura"
I have home schooled my children for a number of years. Currently my children are enrolled in Brick and Mortor schools. Ms. Bernard's book is straight forward and simple to follow from her years of teaching experience in a wide variety of school scenarios. This same advice has helped in my children's school scenarios. This book is a quick read with simple remedies that will help all children do better at school. I think quick advice is exactly what we need to get started right away (no procrastination)on helping out our children secure a brighter future in school.
