5the way it used to be  May 05, 2009

An amazing insight to life as a boy in the 30's,40's and 50's growing up in the Lower East side of NY. The well written anecdotes of boys being boys and growing up together as a tight group will remain in my thoughts. They did not have much; however they had family, friends and faith-all that is needed. A wonderful tale written by author Victor Colaio and a solid, entertaining 5 star recommendation.

5great  May 09, 2010
By Domenic Scagnelli "mickey motto scagnelli"
enjoyed "between 2 bridges" immensley -- i lived at 17 roosevelt street -- my name is mickey scagnelli -- recognized most of the characters in the book -- including one of vic's /the author/ best friends mickey -- who happens to be my cousin with same last name as me.... and his friend georgie egghead -- lived directly across the street from me at 14-16 roosevelt... his sister emma was my sister louise's best friend... what vic says about the delicious figasa /pardon the spelling/ -- that we all purchased every sunday morning is so so true... plus the homemade lemon ice -- was the best i have ever tasted to this day -- and i'm 67 -- the proprietors were named danny and his wife tessie morelli... i attended the same schools as the author -- st. james grammar and cardinal hayes high school... in fact he mentions nuns at st. james that i also had when i attended -- sisters mary gerard and bernadette... to this day i think about my childhood on the lower east side... it was fantastic -- even though we didn't have much -- never ever bored -- not with stoop ball, stick pall, punch ball, kicking the can... all we needed was a 25c spaldeen and our day was st from morning til night... in case the author reads this and wants to send me an e-mail it's mickscag@aol.com

thank you vic for the memories

5remembering the past  Apr 19, 2009

This heartfelt memoir brings into focus how special it was to grow up in a time when neighborhood was everything. Extended family and friends were close by and were an integral part of life. While reading this story you experience the sounds, smells and sights of lower Manhattan. This is a story that will evoke memories of growing up in your own neighborhood. It did for me.

5Refreshing  Apr 13, 2009

This is a wonderful sweet read. It deals with the life of young growing boys during war and after the great depression in downtown NYCity. The author's recollections are priceless and teaches the reader, through his experiences, to love and appreciate life with whatever you are dealt. Colaio does this through humor and depth. I recommend this book to all, especially fitting in these hard economic times, to go back and appreciate what we do in fact have.
