Helps to calm the stress of private school applications Feb 27, 2010 This book is great for those unfamiliar with the private school application process. I was grateful that someone with the knowledge of the process was willing to write about it. Buy this book, it's worth your $$.
Frank Talk about Private Schools Feb 18, 2010 I appreciate the frank and open discussion the authors engage in with the reader. The importantence of matching your child with the right school for him or her is well covered.
Beyond the Brochure gets your mind wrapped around the process of applying to private schools and that turns out to be a good indicator of what life in private school is like for families who choose to be involved and benefit from the experience.
A friend of ours is now relocating to Washington DC. Since she has not been through such a process before, I gave her my book to read to get her focused on the steps she'll need to take to get moving in the right direction and find the best school for her lovely daughter.
FANTASTIC RESOURCE! Feb 15, 2010 This was the best investment I could have made! Insightful and USEFUL! If you're thinking of Private school in LA, BUY THIS BOOK!
Invaluable Insight into the Intangible Feb 14, 2010 I spent the better part of my professional career in Washington, D.C., where--other than academics, of course--the admissions criteria for the most select schools are driven by factors a world away from what Los Angeles's private schools value. Indeed, when I arrived here, I immediately grasped how "uninitiated" I was as I sensed, but did not fully comprehend, the intangible requirements of this city's most elite institutions. In Washington, throngs of aggressively competitive parents vie for elusive spots by navigating their children through the area's subtle yet formidable barriers to acceptance. Thankfully, the book helps one through the Los Angeles equivalent. It offers critical guidance that only an insider (an insider who writes clearly and well, that is) can provide. The book's insight into what local private schools are seeking can help parents present their children in the most favorable light possible. It is a question of emphasis rather than pretense. Yet without Beyond the Brochure the path toward admission would be even more daunting than it is!
Super Helpful! Feb 12, 2010 This book is a great resource for any parent who is going through the drama of applying to private schools in Los Angeles. It definitely gave me insight into the schools I was interested in and what they look for. It also calmed my frazzled nerves and helped me realize that I would find the right "fit" for my child. I highly recommend this book!
