no major epiphanies but worth the money for peace of mind Feb 08, 2010
By wkg mama This book was definitely worth the $31+ i paid for it. It reads a bit like having a conversation with an informed friend.
True, there are typos (including the wrong phone number for SSS financial aid services; the correct # is 800-344-8328), the font is huge, the celebrity quotes are a turnoff and there wasn't much that a common sense parent wouldn't already know.
BUT, it was worth it because: (1) it helped me feel I was on the right track in my approach to researching/applying to schools; and,(2) it got my wheels spinning and inspired me to jot down ideas (what to say in the application essay, who to ask for a recommendation, etc).
A Must Have for Moms Looking to Send Their Kids to a Private School in LA Nov 29, 2011
By L. Costino Last year when I was applying to private schools for my son, I followed Beyond the Brochure to a "T". It worked fantastically - my son was accepted into 2 of the 3 private schools we applied to. I don't think that would have been the case if I hadn't followed the author's directions. She provides excellent tips, advice and suggestions for getting into the private school you select for your children. I can't recommend this book enough if you are feeling overwhelmed about starting the process of applying to private schools in LA.
Invaluable Insight into the Intangible Feb 14, 2010

"S. Lathrop"
I spent the better part of my professional career in Washington, D.C., where--other than academics, of course--the admissions criteria for the most select schools are driven by factors a world away from what Los Angeles's private schools value. Indeed, when I arrived here, I immediately grasped how "uninitiated" I was as I sensed, but did not fully comprehend, the intangible requirements of this city's most elite institutions. In Washington, throngs of aggressively competitive parents vie for elusive spots by navigating their children through the area's subtle yet formidable barriers to acceptance. Thankfully, the book helps one through the Los Angeles equivalent. It offers critical guidance that only an insider (an insider who writes clearly and well, that is) can provide. The book's insight into what local private schools are seeking can help parents present their children in the most favorable light possible. It is a question of emphasis rather than pretense. Yet without Beyond the Brochure the path toward admission would be even more daunting than it is!
Super Helpful! Feb 12, 2010
By M. Lachman This book is a great resource for any parent who is going through the drama of applying to private schools in Los Angeles. It definitely gave me insight into the schools I was interested in and what they look for. It also calmed my frazzled nerves and helped me realize that I would find the right "fit" for my child. I highly recommend this book!
