Much-Needed Ministry Model is Here! Dec 06, 2006
By E. W. Platts Having been in ordained ministry for ten years, I have read all manner of books about pastoral leadership. While seminary did offer some study in this area, I have searched long for such a practical guide to understanding the minister's role within the church. The Reverend Dr. Metze offers a helpful graphic before the first chapter which allows the reader an overview of his thesis. Metze centers his leadership model on God, God's word and wisdom, and God's call. Then Metze shows how our discipleship and discernment, steeped in humility, must be a balance between four different types of leadership: symbolic, political, structural, and human resource-centered. In explaining his thesis, the Rev. Dr. Metze is thorough and very Biblically centered; at the same time, however, he explains each concept using stories from his personal experiences as a pastor. I would recommend this book to a first year ministery student as well as to a seasoned professional who wants to clarify his or her direction in ministry and leadership; this book would also be helpful to lay leaders in the church.

The Rev. Dr. Metze has an undeniable quality of leadership that he conveys well in this book. I'm proud to call him a close friend.
Discovery of the "God" principle in leadership Mar 19, 2009
By Timothy G. Reynolds I have known the Rev. Dr. Tony Metze since before my entrance into seminary. As a matter of fact, he was instrumental in helping me through the discernment process to enter into seminary. His treatment of leadership as a multi-faceted approach is not unique in the secular world, but his addition of the "God" principle (the fifth frame) helps to make his point uniquely Christian. In a world that is searching for a "Purpose driven church" or a "purpose driven life", Tony has shown the guiding purpose for all of life - God. Everyone should have this book on the shelf as both reference and for basic biblical and theological study of leadership. It is helpful for those who have a beginning knowledge of both the Bible and leadership, but can also be helpful for those who wish to dig deeper.
I am using it as devotional material for council retreats and study before council meetings. The council has found it helpful in getting everyone going in the right direction.
Kudos to Tony for tackling this needed study. Should be required reading in seminary and in local congregations!

The Fifth Frame - The Core of Christian Leadership Jan 10, 2007
By William M. Daniels Tony Metze has taken leadership books to a new and exciting level. While most leadership books are boring and slow reading, this book provides a new concept to combine tired and worn out principles into a new way of thinking. Tony expands leadership into Christian leadership principles for today. He tells us that "Christian leaders need to be able to articulate their call to service and their feelings of humility before God." Then he explains how to do that by using scripture examples of Moses and Jesus and their leadership styles. Tony's Fifth Frame shows us that God is the center of Christian leadership where we work our way from "Doing" through "Becoming" into "Being" with God as our perfect leader.
