4Best romantic teen horror martial arts buddy novel ever!  Mar 28, 2005
By tinyclanger
I guarantee that you will never have read a book like this. It fuses all the genres above, and then some, to brilliantly entertaining effect. This is the book you wish had been written while you were still in high school.

The characters, and the plot, begin as fairly off-the-peg cardboard cut-outs (the high-school goth; his dorky but endearing buddies; his sulky, gorgeous ex-girlfriend), but soon acquire real depth and intrigue as things get seriously out of hand in a supernatural plot. Naturally, the only way for our guys to fight back is by kicking some ass, martial arts style (which takes surprisingly well to novel format, although my note to the squeamish is that there are a couple of paragraphs you may want to skip). And it's also a rather sweet love story.

This is right up there with Bubba Ho-Tep as superb trans-genre (not trans-gender - that's a whole 'nother section on Amazon) entertainment. I haven't given it five stars because it's Colyott's first book and I think there's still a little room for improvement as his writing matures. But it's a terrific first novel and one I would heartily recommend you read.

5Dark and creepy  Feb 16, 2005

Definitely a book you don't want to read in the house alone! I highly recommend this book anyone, and am anxiously hoping there's a sequel!

5Captured me from the first page.  Aug 23, 2005
By D. Perry
Charles has really out done him self with this book, it captures your imagination from the beginning, and keeps you enthralled until the last page. The surprising twist at the end makes you want to choke the writer, but in turn you want to immediately read the next novel in the series. Charles has excelled in writing this novel, with a writing style comparatively with Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Anne Rice , or Clive Barker. I am sure he will go far.

"Suddenly their came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. You heard me rapping, right?"

4Good, unadultrated fun  Jun 09, 2005
By Amy B.
Black is a fun and interesting combination of genres: Horror, romance, Kung-Fu, and others. I really enjoyed the character development and the fast paced plot. It's got characters that are very easy to get to like (and hate). I hope a sequel is on the way because the ending leaves you wanting more.

4This should be a movie!  Jun 02, 2005
By Isabel S. Allen
Going in blind, I was truly thrilled by this novel. It grabbed and held me to the bitter (no Hollywood ending here) end. The dialogue was wonderfully appropriate to the characters and entertaining as well. No small feat.
I found myself visualizing the action and wanting to see it on a big screen. Please, pursue this as a screenplay.
Oh, and there better be another book in this "series".
