By Calvin This is a great novel about romance across time. If you are into gay romance this is for you, if you are into vampires this is for you. There is great character development, adventure and surprises. Dixon Pike is a cocky young man who finds true love for eternity!
A Vampire Novel With a Twist Oct 04, 2009

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you surely must be aware that vampires are very much "in" these days as witness Stephanie Meyer's very successful series, "The Twilight Saga," the first of which ("Twilight") was turned into a hugely successful movie in 2008, particularly with teens (and many growups too!). Its highly anticipated sequel, "New Moon" will be released on November 20, 2009. TV's HBO cable channel show, "True Blood," is now in its third season and the CW network channel's new fall series "Vampire Diaries," based on L.J. Smith's vampire novels, is already a hit. In fact, vampires haven't been this popular since Universal's 1931 classic "Dracula" (starring Bela Lugosi) and its many sequels and more recently Anne Rice's vampire novels, the first of which, "Interview With a Vampire," was made into a very popular 1997 film starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
For a very different take on vampires, I highly recommend "Blood Narcissus" by Fred Bisonnes, author of two recent gay-erotica anthologies, "Gemini in Manzanillo" and "The Boy With Bedroom Eyes." Taking a cue from a recent Bravo TV series, "Make Me a Supermodel," Bisonnes' leading character in his full length novel is a handsome 24-year old named Dixon Pike, who, although only taking third place in a similar reality show, is approached by a top Los Angeles modeling agency, Valendor, owned and operated by a pair of homosexual vampires, Valentin Dore, some 2,300 years old and once the crown price of ancient Persia who slept with Alexander the Great and Sasha Mirkov, an 18-year old former principal dancer with the Russian Imperial Ballet who performed before Czar Nicholas II and the Romanov family.
Pike, although somewhat dubious, accepts the offer and is invited to move into the Hollywood mansion of his new employers, where he soon finds himself being bedded by Mirkov, but is not yet aware of the true nature of the two. They, in fact, call themselves "immortals" rather than vampires and except for consuming blood for nourishment, have none of the characteristics of the vampires of legend. They don't have fangs nor do they sleep in coffins or turn into bats. They aren't repulsed by garlic or crucifixes, can go about in the daylight and are even capable of dying in a variety of ways, even by their own hand.
What happens to Pike, who is suddenly thrust into a secret world of beings he thought existed only in folklore, modern novels, B-movies or old TV shows, and the other fascinating characters in this well-written and well-researched novel, will be a revelation and is guaranteed to hold your interest through the last chapter.
The world of modeling agencies, in this case one that employs both male and female models, with its competitiveness, jockying for "top dog" and jealousies is very well depicted by Bisonnes who is somewhat familiar with this world through his beefcake photography of the 1980s, chiefly for Advocate MEN magazine.
