Bonnets and Aprons: Fionna

Upon the sudden death of her mother, nineteenth century Fionna ardently endeavors to fill that honored role for her younger siblings. When their father remarries, tentative hopes that their father's new wife will come to benefit their family with added happiness, are trampled by the harsh reality of their bitter stepmother's selfishness and their father's continuing indifference. Sacrificing her own romantic prospects for the greater good of her younger siblings, Fionna struggles to guide her sometimes imprudent sisters towards better matches than their vain flirtations might secure them. As time and circumstances pass, Fionna stoically resigns herself to life as a spinster, as her younger sisters begin to marry off and move away one by one. Fionna ultimately fears that her selfless dedication to her brothers and sisters may have forever closed the door to a future with the one man she ever loved.

5Jane Austen on the Prarie  Oct 13, 2006
By J. Austen Fan
Excellent book!! I love Jane Austen, Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Bronte sisters, George Elliot, Laura Ingalls Wilder and other writers of excellent fiction. This book is written in the same style and is in anything but predictable. So many of the authors of this century seem to have fallen into the formula story trap. I previewed this book at [...] and finished the book just days ago. It is so engaging that I couldn't put it down. It is a must read!

5A Fine Role Model  May 05, 2010
By Elrond
My daughters enjoyed this story in many ways. There is humor, tragedy, hope and romance. It reads like a real young woman's journal throughout her teen years back in the earlier to mid eighteen hundreds America. This novel is refreshingly not formulaic, and keeps you wondering what is around every next corner. Fionna is a fine role model for especially young women to follow. Women of any age should enjoy this wholesome treat, which reminds a little, of `Little Women'. Though the reading level may be higher, any tween or young tween with advanced reading ability or comfortable ease with classic literature should enjoy it.

5do yourself a favor and read this book...you won't be sorry!  Apr 29, 2007
By babapat
what a compelling novel...i couldn't put it down...i felt like i was there and fiona was telling me the story...it is so well written and the story is wonderful...it is full of love, courage, hope and heartbreak and more hope and yes, more heartbreak...it brought laughter and tears and the ending begs for a sequel...it is not an ending, but a new beginning...and i so want to know what happens in their lives...i certainly won't be able to give it to anyone as a gift, because my tear stains are on lots of the pages...kudos to kerri bennett williamson for a wonderful story...but i can only imagine what happens next...i hope we will find out...

5Bonnets and Aprons: Fionna  Apr 12, 2007
By Cathy Witbeck
I found Ms. Williamson's book to be well researched. The language and setting were well written. The story is engaging and you find yourself impressed with the strength of character in Fiona. This character is a fine role model for young women of today. If you enjoy Victorian era romance with a hint of humor, you would enjoy this well told story.
