Braided Shame: A Mystery Novel

In Braided Shame a suave college fundraiser scores the really big gift only to have his heiress donor turn up dead, and he himself becomes the chief suspect. This cozy whodunit featuring a triangle among gay men is set on a small Southern campus filled with secrets. Braided Shame is about art and life, lies and truth, loneliness and family, treachery and revenge, forgiveness and redemption. The author, Louis Briel, is a nationally known portrait painter. In Braided Shame he paints with words on the page instead of pigment on canvas, bringing to the novel a wealth of experience from his career as a college fundraiser in the 1970's and his long association with art and artists. 4Great new voice  Jun 08, 2010

Braided Shame will not disappoint. Persuasively and convincingly written and quick-paced I find it comparable to some of the best of its genre. Readers of Patricia Highsmith now have someone to fill the void.

4Very impressive first novel  Feb 02, 2009
By S. Baker
Mr. Briel's Braided Shame is not boring. His conversation driven first novel is filled with intriguing characters and painterly language. And by that I mean that true to his first art, he paints the scenes with his words, often using delightfully attractive word combinations. He chose a fascinating thread (or perhaps I should say hair) to maintain continuity. The pace is fast and you must pay attention. I found myself taking breaks to absorb what I had read, both the action and the description. Braided Shame made me reflect on many topics, including but now limited to: art and elitism, desperation, loyalty, parenting. I commend the author on this first effort, and look forward to more from him.

4Think you know who did it? Maybe not......  Nov 08, 2008

I really enjoyed this book! I thought the author was taking us in one direction and suddenly he's leading us to several different paths and possibilities. Very well written. Hopefully Mr. Briel has more in store for us.

5EXCITING, ENTICING, RIVETING +++  Nov 03, 2008
By Everett C. Alexander, PhD "Everett C Alexander, PhD"
I cannot remember the last time I truly could not put down a novel.

You really are quite the "painting" writer. Your use of descriptive words & phrases, allowed me to almost feel exactly what the specific character was feeling at any given time. Plus I have so much in common with so many of the characters I felt at times I was reading my own story, especially with my character defects being so plainly pointed out in so many scenes.

I love the twists and turn of events that seemed to mesh together to spin many webs of deceit and at the same time I felt the forgiveness that was given and received by some of the characters.

I never had the feeling that I knew "who did it"! Then end was a total surprise.

2I've seen this before  Apr 24, 2011
By Clifford Curlee "Cliff Curlee"
I wanted to like this. I bought it from the author from the trunk of his car, and he is a fellow Hampden-Sydney grad.

However, I could not complete the first chapter.

It seems like a mishmash of Christie, Hammett, John Carr, and Armistead Maupin. While Robert B. Parker can pay tribute to two or more of tehses styles, not many can.

Unfortunately, these characters seemed wooden against a distracting neon background.

If one is looking for a good mystery, go the the original and avoid the...homeage.
