Brains: The Sensational Hospital Thriller

This taut hospital thriller opens with James Gray reflecting on his Nobel Prize for Medicine, in which he pays tribute to a simple fisherman whom he dubs the Einstein of Medicine, whose dangerous research into shark brains led to his breakthrough. It was this man, and not himself, who found the cure for cancer. As James relates, "He was not the arrogant and sadistic criminal that the tabloids attacked with frenzy. ... It's true to say he made mistakes and some died, but how many are surviving now?" Probably closer to science fact than science fiction, this novel is a powerful cocktail of sex, dope, and medical research, that spirals into jealousy, revenge and murder. Deliciously trashy, 'Brains' is a fast paced, plausibly woven, compelling read.

5the chaos theory in a prose format  Jun 13, 2009
Primarily 'Brains' by Martin Simpson, is a bloody good, page turning read. I couldn't put it down!
The reader is introduced to the central characters via an intriguing blend of reality and fiction. Early in the story the reader is very aware that Mr Simpson is planting seeds. The plot and character development then takes over and it's a twisting, turning, roller coaster ride; so much so, that the reader is barely aware that Mr Simpson is patiently and carefully watering his seedlings. The incredible roller coaster ride continues to thrill and surprise. Only in the last few pages is the reader startled to find themselves eating the fruit from Mr Simpsons' garden. Highly recommended read!!!

From the first page this book captivated my attention. Beautifully written with a wicked sense of humor, and a thorough knowledge of medicine and human frailty it held my interest from cover to cover and left me hungry for more when it was finished.
It has all the classic elements of the Gothic horror genre of the scientist dying to try his new 'cure that will save the world'; yet set in our time, in places like hospitals that are supposed to give us comfort and the hope for recovery, this terror is much more real and almost inescapable.
