Buddha: An Illustrated Introduction

'Buddha: An Illustrated Introduction' is a funny but accurate intro to the philosophy of Buddhism. Many Westerners know about the meditation practices of Buddhism, but few understand the Buddha's philosophical teachings. This book puts the teachings (dharma) in its proper context, and unravels some of the more dense knots of Buddha's thinking. And it does all this while entertaining the reader with humorous illustrations and pop-culture sensibility. Use this primer to cut through the New Age nonsense that often gets confused with Buddhism. And get some laughs too. Stephen T. Asma is a respected Buddhist scholar who serves as a wonderful guide through the territory of Buddhist fundamentals.

5A great primer  Jun 12, 2007
A concise introduction to the life of Buddha, what influenced his thinking and the belief system he espoused. The book is modern, approachable and anything but dense. I particularly enjoyed the parallels Socrates. A great read.

5Excellent summary of Buddhist philosophy  Nov 26, 2006
If you're looking for a strong introduction to Buddhism with a fresh and unpretentious approach, get this little book! I read Asma's "The Gods Drink Whiskey" and immediately looked for more of his writing. This little "Introduction" (which appears to be a reprint of his "Buddha for Beginners")did not disappoint. The drawings are funny, the writing is clear and the logic of Buddhism is made transparent.
