Calamity's Children Dec 24, 2009
By Paulette Bridges Calamity's Children is a vividly written novel set in the era of the American Civil War and five decades of post-war renewal. The central character, Gabriel Masters, courageously survives the war only to find his personal life in tatters. With some good fortune and much hard work he rebuilds his life and makes his fortune in California where opportunities are abundant. Near the end of his life he brings resolution to a decades old loss, and quenches the loneliness he has always felt. The novel is filled with rich descriptions of time, place, and charaters. The author seems of have well researhed his topic.
Civil War and effect on after life--Great Jul 14, 2011
By Jimmie B. Howard Joaquin has captured the turmoil of the Civil War, and also what and how war can affect life after its conclusion. It gives an enjoyable review of history and movement of people from the war zone to a life in the South, to a life in the West. I enjoyed the story line, the well documented references to history of the development of our country, and especially the thoughts and actions/reactions of war veterans to every day situations. I highly recommend it for people who have had exposure to military life in our country, and it would be great reading for people who would like to understand our people and how history has affected our behavior. I highly recommend it for reading.
A great read Jul 10, 2011
By helen We really enjoyed reading this Civil War novel and were impressed with the detail and research involved. The story was entertaining and an insight as to how hard must have been for the families during that trying time in American history. We would recommend it to everyone who is interested in recalling the Civil War and also want a great book to read.
Calamity's Childern Jul 10, 2011
By fstarr Simpley put, Just a very well written Novel, The depth of the characters and the description of the places put you right in the time and place. One of the few books out there that deals with post Civil War life and how that terrible conflict impacted the lives of those who survived to pick up the pieces. Unbelieveable writing for a first time Authur. I highly recommend. Frank

By Joniface Joaquin Andre Hawkins has done a magnificent job in portraying the characters from the Civil War era. His use of descriptive language is beautiful and gets across the necessary effects to place the reader into the story. The book is much more than just a Civil war setting. Joaquin takes us through the aftermath of the war and weaves the characters in and out of conflicts, mosty due to the war. The main character, Gabriel Masters has much to overcome and shows that good will always triumph! The book is based on fact interwoven with fiction creating an interesting story.
