Captiva Island: A Novel

Atlanta columnist and Buckhead resident Julia Parks is invited to the lush South Florida island of Captiva to interview and write the biography of renowned romance novelist and Georgia native Helen Van Buren. No journalist, reporter or talk show host had been granted the privilege to interview the 86-year-old recluse throughout her 21-book career. Julia’s intrigue as to why she’s the chosen one sends her packing and on a plane headed South in a hurry. Nestled among a canopy of banyan trees and palms, beneath the roof of Mrs. Van Buren’s gingerbread island cottage, Julia finds one last unpublished manuscript. As the fragile old woman reads aloud to Julia from delicate pages that take us back to 1930s Macon, Georgia, and on up the road to Atlanta during days of the "Gone with the Wind" premier, secrets that have been held captive for over half a century surface that connect these women in more ways than either of them ever imagined.

4Very Interesting  Jan 16, 2008
By ANITA SANFORD
I read the exerpt and wanted to see the rest of the book. I like how the author throws major bombshells into the mix with no warning. It gets your attention. Also the lady in the book seems to be sensible and not just some young dreamy blonde push-over ready to be carried away by a smooth talking fellow.

4OK...  Feb 07, 2008

I couldn't like the main character as I have a real problem with adultery. She seemed like a spoiled woman that had put her wants before those of her family, especially her husband. The author set up the scenes well and has a knack of keeping the story moving. I probably wouldn't buy the book but that daren't mean the author hasn't done a good job.

4Smooth, clean writing  Jan 18, 2008
By Katie L. Hart "waterfall_books"
I hardly noticed the time pasting as I read through this excerpt. The prose flows perfectly from one paragraph to the next without a ripple of distraction. The main character was well-rounded and sympathetic, and the hint of mystery behind the biography writer request pulled me along like an invisible silken thread. Both the strength and weakness of Julia's character is shown in her determination to end the affair that can wreck her marriage.

While the writing does an excellent job about getting itself out of the way so the story can shine through, there is a danger of this story being forgettable. If the story itself isn't unique, this novel might fall by the wayside, but the author should have no problem finding a home for her prose.

5Captiva Island Review  Jan 16, 2008
By Suzanne N. Schmelzle
The excerpt from Sumner's novel leaves the reader with many intriguing possibilites to ponder: will the affair continue, will the marriage be saved, and what is the connection between the character's grandmother and the famous author. The possibilities seem well-rounded as it appears that the novel will most likely juxtapose her exciting "fantasy" vacation in Captiva with her more mundane, yet cherished family life back home. Foreshadowing, conflict, and characterization seem to be well established. I look forward to reading this novel.

5You have gotten me hooked - I want to read more!  Jan 17, 2008
By T. Lyons
I like the way the book started quickly with several different stories going on. It leaves you wondering what will happen next in each situation. It seems like the kind of book that would be hard to put down. I sure hope it gets published!
