Great College Transition Tool! Mar 08, 2010 Russ Does a great job of "filling the gap" between the sports/academic part of a young life and the job world. The "how to" chapters on wirting a resume and preparing for that "interview" should be invaluable to the student athlete who is serious in making the move from a structured student athletic environment into the real world. Russ provides incredible detail into all of the possible pitfalls and traps that may await one who is just venturing into the job market for the first time. As an athlete way back in the 1970's, there was no help available for us to make that very important step into the "unknown". All student athletes should have this publication as an initial must read and a future reference guide for what will be many changes during one's career(s).
Educator Mar 05, 2010 When Russ approached me about the Career Ball idea, I really liked what he was thinking about. Well, after reading through the book, I really believe that he has hit the nail on the head. I realized that many of the things that I value from athletics were not transferred personally in my career goals. Career Ball is critical reading for all Athletes. If you are a collegiate athlete you can only win. If you are a High School athlete with aspirations to play beyond this level, Career Ball is an essential.
I have a graduating senior living with me now and have asked him to read this book. He is realizing that furthering his sports career is much more than just having fun, but it is all part of the process of his life plan. If coaches in high school could share this with their prospective athletes moving on to the collegiate level, they would be providing a tremendous boost to their kids.
I would hope that Russ' book would become mandatory reading in college courses or even be a course that could be co-adopted by Business departments and Physical Education Departments across the country.
Career Ball is real life experiences and practicality that applies to all athletes.
Great Job Russ!
Like a worthy college course in career planning Dec 16, 2009 Reading CareerBall has been fun and enlightening. The author's style is very informative and easy going. The level of information presented and tips for career planning for people whose lives have reflected accomplishments in athletics is like an upper division college course, and even better, it is definitely material you can continue to refer to and use after your college days and well into your future career or career change. If you read this book and apply the principles you will be well on your way to a rewarding career. I think this book is very appropriate for college students, high school seniors and their parents, coaches and any age of athlete looking to leverage characteristics of their athleticism into their future career search and work performance.
Finally, a playbook for the rest of your life after the game Dec 04, 2009 Very enjoyable read that offers an organized view of how competitive athletics and the real world collide. Anyone involved in sports can benefit from this book as a way to put their athletic skills and mindset to work in creating a life you want and not settle for whatever happens. I'm passing it on to my teenage son and daughter who are both involved in sports but often don't appreciate what it can do for you later in life. A book that any young atheletes and their parents should check out -
Fantastic support and resource Dec 01, 2009 "CareerBall is a fantastic support and resource for any athlete needing to make the transition from sports to career. If you are passionate about your sport, and have dedicated yourself to the intensity and discipline that it takes to succeed in competitive sports, then you have earned some tremendous strengths that could be translated into success in a career.
But it's not as simple as you might think. The challenges of changing from a physical world with well established and very tangible structures and expectations to a career that may demand a more abstract and open-ended mindset can be daunting. CareerBall gives you the tools and information you need to prepare yourself for that transition, so that you can draw from your hard work and intensity, and use your strength to create a winning approach to life.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. For any athlete who is facing or will face such a transition, for any parent, coach, or mentor of an athlete, CareerBall should be a fundamental source of guidance."
