Wisdom for Day-to-Day Problems Apr 02, 2011
By Warner F. Davis In this post-excess moment of recovering from an economy that went poof, Dr. Scruggs's "Centered Living/ Centered Leading" is a timely book. A Christian adaptation of the Chinese classic "The Tao Te Ching" which draws on the convergence of biblical and Taoist wisdom, it fosters, through its 81 two-page chapters, the guidance needed to solve day-to-day problems. And where it's particularly relevant for our current struggle is in the good judgment it nurtures to avoid the pitfalls of a consumerist culture.
Speaking repeatedly for the restraint of enough, one example of the book's solid thinking is:
There is no misfortune greater than selfish craving. There is no calamity greater than pervasive discontent. There is no catastrophe greater than unrestrained greed.*
"Centered living/Centered Leading" strikes a chord. It makes the wisdom of the ages accessible. Based on the fundamental truth that decisions made in the present have consequences for the future, it enables us to choose wisely today to build for tomorrow.
It's a must-read.
