Low Country Lore Aug 24, 2007
By June Hopkins
"June Hopkins"
Alice VanTrease has given us a wonderful read with Charlie's Secret. It is a novel reeking with the charm and mystery of the Charleston - Savannah corridor. A writer with insight into the precariously balanced racial relations that evolved during the second half of the twentieth century, she weaves a compelling tale. Ms. VanTrease skillfully involves the reader into Emily Chandler's attempts to reconcile herself to her past and unravel a mystery. The wry humor in conjunction with human tragedy makes this a truly southern novel. Yet, the visual images that emanate from the pages, the finely drawn characters, and the redemptive message embedded in the plot convince me that this should be developed as a film project.
An enjoyable journey Oct 24, 2011
By Jeanette I thoroughly enjoyed this Southern flavored story. Having grown up in South Carolina, I felt as if I knew the characters. That part was a trip down memory lane. The story captured my interest and held it to the very end. I finished it with tears in my eyes and was left wanting more. An entertaining read with a great cast of characters.
A Great Read- Holds you with it's writing until the end Jul 23, 2007
By Boni I was drawn into the story by the characters, the depth of their richness and the raw, varied emotions heavy with old Southern charm of the plantation life and the deep beliefs vested in the "black magic" of that place. I felt the grace those lives were lived with, while experiencing both granduar and proverty. The author has woven Charlie expertly into and through the story, carring him along with laughter and suspense until the end where you are "on the edge of your seat", finally allowing the reader to see who he has been all the time. What a way to end this story.
The writing produces such a deep connection in you with the old South and these people who connect you to them and it, as though you live it with them.
Ya'll will love this book! Jul 20, 2007
By Susan A This book grabbed me from the get-go. That the author has a firm footing in Southern culture is obvious. Can you say "atmospheric"? I could almost smell turnip greens and cornbread way up here in YankeeLand.:-) A wonderful storyline and a great read. Fannie Flagg, look out---Ms Vantrease is about to fry your green tomatoes!

A Breathtaking Mystery! Jul 16, 2007
By Tamie A. Peters I absolutely loved this book! It caught me from the first word and had me reading until I finished "Charlie's Secret". It is so descriptive of the South, the love which bound them all together and life on a Plantation in the Low Country. Relationship's abound, character's become your friend's, and Charlie, it's all about Charlie! What an amazing movie this story would make. I hope it make's the "big screen".
I actually think that it is a better understanding of the South and relationship's than "Driving Miss Daisy", but what do I know.
Respectfully submitted by, Tamie A Peters
