Positive & Negative reinforcement horse training. May 04, 2008
By David W. Young Perhaps it is unusual to be thrilled about a book at the age of 80, but this book which combines Positive Reinforcement [clicker] & Negative [Natural Horsemanship] Reinforcement is the most up to date book of its kind for horses. It is filled with great one liners and specific step by steps: "how to do it". And the steps are in order. I thought I was inventing this but she does it better than I do. I train my horses from scratch and ride into the high back-counry alone. You have to trust each other up there.
Every thing I could find in the book works and makes the relationship better at the same time.
She defines dominance [in the round pen chapter] and I use something from Rashid I use called Accepted Horse Leader: Those are the same terms only because of the way she does it. Being dominate in a forceful way is not there, but what I call being an Accepted Leader is there. She explains why being safe is important and how to achieve that safety for both of you in the best way possible for both of you.
The stories are all so meaningful and encouraging, stories that come only from a long and very creative experience.
If you have been doing this work on your own, you don't have to be alone anymore. This is a great book.
She also fades out the clicker: A "how to" that is often neglected.
The only objection I have is there is no Index. Dr. Phil didn't have one in his 1st book either so she is in good company. Drat: No index.
Don't forget to read the Closing on p 306.
Thrilling, Yes, Thrilling,
David

Delightfully and unexpectedly useful! Sep 08, 2010
By Natural Hoof Care Practioner A friend recommended this book to me and I am now delighted she did. I have trained horses for going on 30 years, been training with natural methods for 11 years or so.
I thought clicker training was just a continual trading of food for behavior, which I find unappealing for either horses or dogs. This book showed me I WAS WRONG!!!
The author shows, in detail, a way to TEACH horses in a positive manner (with treats), but then the horse gets to "show you what they know" and become responsible for their behavior in a cooperative and positive way. Negative reinforcement only comes into play when the task is learned! THIS IS AWESOME! All the natural horse training systems start with and totally rely on negative reinforcement to teach- something that doesn't lend itself to a real partnership with your horse as they are only trying to avoid discomfort. Sure they learn, but this way is BETTER- light years better!!
IF YOU ARE A TRAINER, please buy this book and improve your client's horses! Buy this book if you want your own horse to be a truly cooperative equine partner! For whatever reason, just buy it.

By Deb I usually don't write reviews on books that I have purchased but this is one of the best books on training horses I have ever bought! My grandchildren are even training the horse. Before they were too slow with letting the horse know when she was doing something right but not any more with clicker training! It is well worth the money and it really does work!
Great clicker training book! Oct 10, 2011
By Saskia Dockrill Leslie Pavlich has developed this unique clicker training program to start or re start a horse with Clicker Training. It works great for my horses. I also work with horses of other people, most of the time problem horses and I haven't met a horse that wouldn't respond positive on this program. A must read for every horse lover of any age!
