A joy to read! Mar 10, 2010
By Nancy L. Krueger Fred McCarthy is a fascinating storyteller! Close Calls & Happy Landings is filled with heartwarming, real-life experiences and amazing personal adventures recalled in a genuine, passionate, down-to-earth, humorous, "tell it like it was" style. I often laughed out loud at his choice of words as he recounted the tales. You feel as though this gentle family man is sitting with you unassumingly telling his life stories and conveying what he has learned over 83 years. As an intelligent man without the formal education so often required today, he became highly successful as an engineer, pilot, boat designer/builder, businessman and other ventures through hard work, determination, some Irish feistiness and wonderful marriage to Miss Donuts. A joy to read! Thanks for sharing your life with us!
Entertaining Dec 18, 2010
By Emma In a very readable, conversational style, Fred McCarthy recreates the era of dare-devil flying and entrepreneurship in this country. He paints a nostalgic picture of southern New Jersey in the 50's and 60's--a "must read" for anyone interested in these subjects. The whole book is quite entertaining!
Mr. MaCarthy's close calls... Jun 13, 2010
By James B. Dearing If you're interested in the kind of deep human intelligence which can be expressed by an engineer and builder, don't miss this read. Fred McCarthy in his book "Close Calls and Happy Endings" has the perfect metaphor for a rich life well led: the boat. Not a writer, but clearly a man of immense talent and equal humility (perhaps flying airplanes gave him his sense of place in the world)his stories have as much flash and filigree as Chaucer. From his first little skiff (made when a boy)to the sophisticated Jersey offshore fishermen, he tells the tales of vessels he built and how well they have carried him on his journey. And if you don't read, the pictures alone are a joy. --Jamie Bruce Dearing.
A charming adventure Mar 23, 2010
By B. Strahs I thoroughly enjoyed reading Close Calls & Happy Landings. Fred McCarthy's stories about his life, as a boat builder, pilot, businessman, and entrpreneur, are filled with a sense of adventure, fun and charm. Fred can teach all of us how to recognize the opportunities, enjoy the successes, overcome the obstacles, and most of all, love life.
