Comatose Management: Six Short Stories of Destructive Management Practices

Organizations, both large and small, are loaded with incompetent management and seem to continuously make poor business decisions because of beliefs that go unquestioned or unrecognized. If we take a moment and actually think about what we are doing and why we are doing it, we begin to realize our behaviors and beliefs are frequently causing exactly the opposite outcome of what we desire. This quick read has six short stories about companies of all sizes and types that constantly take ten steps forward and nine steps back. Scott R. Sheaffer will entertain you as he brings to light that the nine steps back are frequently the same nine steps. Reading these stories will illuminate some of the reasons for the inconsistent and incongruent behaviors of management. You will see all the companies you have ever worked for in these stories. Your conscious awareness will be jogged in a way that will enable you to make changes in yourself and your organization. This awareness will provide a competitive advantage for you and your company and become the impetus for change - for your employer, your management and you.

5As an Engineer, this has been very educational...  Mar 12, 2010
By Stephen R. Breen
So Sales Management books aren't something I would typically read (I read engineering level techy stuff), but this thing is an absolute gem. It's key is the "Who Moved My Cheese" simplicity combined with a endearing, draws-you-in story telling model than ensures a quick read. Weeks after finishing it, I could still recite the gist of each of the chapters, which in and of itself is a major accomplishment for any author.

Well done, highly recommended.

5And I thought it was just me....  Jan 19, 2010

In this book, Scott articulates situations that are all too common in corporate America. Many situations were a "walk down memory lane" for me. Thought-provoking and insightful.

5I saw myself  Dec 17, 2009
By T Summer "TS"
Great book to read while recovering from surgery. Not only have I worked with some of the people Scott describes, I often struggle to not be one of them. It is difficult to not have brief moments of falling into these characters when you're in management. He may have even saved me some future grief by writing about managers I don't want to become.
It is impossible to not have witnessed or worked with these people if you've been around the block. I would recommend this book for young managers to make them aware of some pitfalls as they mature in their fields.
I look forward to more books from Scott. Thanks.

5"Been There, Done That"  Dec 09, 2009
By N. D. Mignone
I laughed and cringed my way through Scott's wisdom revealed in six adventures in the business world. I laughed at the perfect caricatures of managers and executives; if only those individuals could see the humor and then change their ways, so many more businesses would succeed. I cringed when I recognized some of the same enviroments I tolerated because I thought I just did not know enough. Any person considering an entrepreneurial path or a promotion to the upper echelons of corporate America should consider reading this book for its anecdotal wisdom.

Anyone who has experienced the corporate culture of business today has been where Scott Sheaffer takes us in COMATOSE MANAGEMENT. But have we looked close enough to really see it for what Soctt shows us it is in his thought-provoking stories? This easy-to-read book is a must have for anyone who wants a "wake-up call" to business as it really is. This book is a FABULOUS read - get it for yourself and your colleagues today, and release yourself from that comatose state of mind.
