'Coming of Age' a delight to read Dec 11, 2007
By Thomas Stevens Coming of Age On the Appalachian Trail is a delight to read. In it, Barry Veden offers readers his honest assessment of his own spiritual growth that resulted through a number of hiking adventures he made along the Appalachian Trail a decade ago. The life dangers he faced and conquered alone (such as foul weather, physical and mental illness, wildlife near misses and general inexperience) while on these trips are truly remarkable and further proof, as he writes, that in the end "he (was) not walking these trails alone."
My only disappointment was the book's length. At 56 pages, I was left wanting more..much more of his outstanding non-fiction recollections of hiking the AT and of his surprisingly enjoyable fictional short stories "Lord of the Mountain" and Dawn." Based on this work, I look forward to reading additional titles from writer Barry Veden.
